I pulled for three hours today on the rez, caught NOTHING. Saw one other puller & he indicated that he hadn't caught anything either. But it was fun getting to know my i-pilot a little better.:)
well I bought some more bandit 300 crankbaits today, think I may have the start of an addiction on my hands. but they were a color ive never seen before called crappie! has anyone seen them before?
for starting this thread. I have learned more reading the posts on this subject than from any other fishing resource. I am now officially addicted.
Pulled again Saturday on Sardis but wind gave me fits caught enough to feed the family. Took 6 yr old yesterday. Fished Sardis from 7 to 3. Finally found fish out from Holiday at Noon and caught 34 crappie but only 13 keepers. Plus 6 white bass, 1 largemouth, 3 cats and 1 unknown linebreaker.Using only 4 poles and son as the firstmate IT WAS the definition of a Chinese Firedrill!! 6 yr old proclaimed that pulling cranks is now his favorite kind of fishing!! He never got bored and did not want to leave!! Thanks guys for all of your helpful tips.:)
Thanks for the nod Lacy1, but I only posed the question. The meat came from all the respondents, but, like you, I have read it many times and learned a lot about pulling cranks.
Ok, if I was going to buy some Wally Marsh cranksbaits to run on the big lakes, which depth, size, and colors do I need to get?
Going to try to orders some of the bandits off their site, give the the colors I need, I know mostly 300 series, right?
Wally Marshall Crappie Cranks 3/8 OZ , Two and a quarter inch size size. Ole Miss, Bubblegum, PinkieToe, and Midnight Fire are the colors that I like the best in the WM crankbaits. Lavender Shad works pretty good too.
Thanks G and Steve.
I'm looking at the Bandit site now. And I just want the 300 series, right, not the 400 or 700 or the Deep Flat Maxx, right.
Ok, off topic question, on the Bandit site, there is a fishing reports section, well I didn't see the big lakes in Mississippi listed and Bandit is in Sardis?
Is that a strategy to keep the folks stalking Torch down to just WB?
Ok back to buy crankbaits.
Yep 300 series on the Bandits

Pulled cranks today at Sardis and MAN, that was fun. Pulled with my original four poles and I stayed busy for about three hours. Could not believe how big the fish were. Only caught two short fish & one Goo, the rest were quality crappie. I quit keeping fish after seven, even released two from my live well. What a great day!!:D:DCan't wait until tomorrow.;)
Oh, and BTW, nothing has ever been invented for a solo fisherman that is better than the Terrova with I-pilot. It's too amazing to describe tonight but just imagine that you set your course and speed and then don't have to drive the boat any more.. Sweet.
A few 200's aren't bad to have either. Ran into a situation about 2 weeks ago where the crappie wanted the 200's more than the 300's even though they were run at the same depth. I assume this was because to get the 300's shallow where the crappie were chasing shad, they were being spooked by the boat. The 200's were being run on a longer line, but were running high in the water column.
Maj is correct on the Ipilot.
What fishing rods do most of you use for pulling cranks? I saw those B&M Pro Staff Trolling Rods on the Midwest crappie show. Are they worth the extra? What length pole do you use and why? When I read this thread there was a lot of different length talked about. How many rods do you run when there are 2 of you in the boat?
The B'n'M Pro Trollers are worth the money. Length is just personal preferance and fishing style. I use 10 and 12 footers. I will eventually replace my 10 footers with more 12 footers for pulling off the back. Some folks like to pull off the sides and have different length rods. I fan mine of the back corners with two sets of four Hy-Tek rod holders and I can get them spaced out ok with all same length poles. I am also set up where I can pull 4 off the sides when I am by myself and its nice having different length rods in that application.
I pull 5 off the sides by myself. An 11 and an 8 on one side and a 12, 10, and an 8 on the other. I use B&M jig poles and have had no trouble with them. I picked up a couple of 6 foot Diawas today to try straight out the back.
I have had a blast the last two days pulling cranks a Sardis. Pre-fishing Fri, marked some spots where I caught fish and today, went back to those same spots and caught my first ever "limit". If you fish by yourself and you want to pull cranks, get a Terrova with I-pilot and you will thank me.
I went through where you were and a few other places and they were not hitting squat. I FINALLY found a few out in the middle of the dang lake
DD - You aren't alone, we fished again yesterday and it was definitely tougher, Yikes & Speck said the same thing too. I think that front passing through messed it up some.
I had put the boat in, parked the truck and was heading down to the ramp and hear. HEY, DonDon, that you? I turned around and Kent was over there lining his poles up so I went over and talked abit with him before I went back down. Well, bout 2 or so hours later I got a text from him asking me if it was as slow for me as it was him. Course later on I got another text saying he had 3, 15 inchers dadgummit. Then again by that time, I had 2 at 14 1/2 and a 15 incher myself:D
Well if it was slow for Driscoll then it really must have been a tough day.
Not that bad, Yikes said Kent left w/ 22 around 11 or so, lol. We caught a 16 3/4" some of you guys would have liked the day (pic in thread called "Caption Contest", so it happened:) ) before but everything else we had was average, the wind blew us off of that spot pretty early on.
I know I said I was gonna go with only four crank pulling rigs but just got in two new J&M 8' pro trollers with line counters of course. Think I'm going to run the 12' and 8' straight off the sides and my two 10'ers straight out the back for line separation & see how that works. Anyone have any thoughts on this setup?
Maj. I think with my new racks on each side I will run those 3 on each side and if there are two or more of us fishing I may run two off the back.
They tell me when pulling straight out the back to have your rod holders angled upwards...this is supposed to keep the rods from getting pulled out. Does anyone have any input on this? sat? , Wannabe? , torch? Anyone?
I've heard that too G, thanks.
that is the way i ran the two out the back at sardis, put them up at about a 30 degree angle and it worked fine. Even when that 3 pound cat hit it the rod stayed in place (thanks E-Z!!)
don;t even put my name up in there on knowing something. LOL I run 3 out each side. 16, 12 and 8, then out the back, I have built in rod holders and use 6 foot rods and YES, turn them up and they won't come out of the holder. I use the 6 footers here because the higher you have the rod tips, the more line you have to have out to get the the desired depth. I have 4 foot of separation on my out the side poles and then to my inner poles, I have 8 feet, then between the inner poles, I have 6 feet so I don't get tangled as often
common sense on how high. I learned how much to turn them up when I had a rod fly out the back of the boat. OOPSY DAISY LOL
Dang! you were pulling cranks with a fly rod ?
Pulled cranks today at Grenada with tritonman. We released all we caught, including a 16" and a 15". Caught a lot of fish most were small but would have had a good mess if we had kept them. Here are a couple.

Enjoyed fishing with t-man today. See you on the lake.
Glad you guys got to go and get on some fish.
Enjoyed It Maj!!!
man I have got to figure out how to resize these iphone pics....And by the way Maj, thanks for making me think about spending more money on the ipilot set up. That thing is SWEET!!!
