I for one have learned a lot from this thread. Thanks for starting it Maj.
Maj - I'll vouch for the 16-12-8' front to back setup out the sides, I can pretty much turn on a dime with no tangles as long as I don't have a ton of line out and I can't do that with only 2' difference in the rod lengths (as in 12-10-8 or something). I'll sometimes add a couple of down lines to that mix on 6' rods out the front holders.
Cost of adding those line counter reels will put me off a little while, but what is some things that have worked for the folks like me running just spinning reels to help gauge line length. The rod length staggered like ya'll mentioned makes perfect sense. The way my boat is set up, it is too much to try and only pull off the rear while using the big motor with buckets or drift socks (unless one person drives and one person fishes and that just ain't all that much fun). By pulling longer rods off the front and two batteries for the trolling motor, I see that being the method I will use. One battery lasted long as I wanted on my first trip but there wasn't much of any kind of wind and the digital maximizer on the M/K helped too.
Hey the Okuma line counter reels that a lot of us use can be had for 24.99 each at Northwoods Okuma Magda Pro Line Counter MA-15DX Northwoods Wholesale Outlet
I don't use buckets or drift socks....I use a Troll a Matic trolling plate on my 115 four stroke. I pull 6 poles three on each side .....I drive and watch the three on my side and my partner watches the three on his side. If I catch a fish....my partner holds the steering wheel straight for me while I reel it in. I sometimes have also tied the steering wheel with a bungie cord that I can hook and unhook easily.
thats a pretty good price for those reels.......................anyone tried these Shakespeare Line Counter : Cabela's
so which is better the Okuma line counter reels or the daiwa line counter reels?
First of all, I hope this thread goes and goes and goes as long as people are teachin and learnin... Thanks Maj for starting it, I would have never started pullin if not for you.
Bee was not too productive today. I know they are there, but the lake is down a foot or foot an half from when I last caught them. Water looks great, wind was bad.
These pics are things that could happen to keep the day from being too dull.
i got a couple of those line counters from bps that you can clip on your poll and take off. they work ok if your trying to save a few bucks give you an ok idea of how much line you have out. Better than nothing!!!!

nice bass there EZ! as long as we are getting our string stretched it is all good
After numerous attempts at pulling cranks on Ross Barnet Rez, I finally found a few. Put in at Twin Harbor, went to the channel and turned north. Here are a few from last Friday.

Also got to meet DoubleGobble00, from a couple of boat lengths anyway, dang nice guy, look forward to getting to know him at one of the camps.
This shot of the cute fisheys on the ff is especially for Wannabee, he sure likes those fisheys.:D

Way to go Maj.....I knew you could find some. :)
Maj is gettin' GOOD at this game. Came in 3rd at Enid! :) :) :)
One of our newest members SuperTechMRI and his wife came in first. Pulling cranks for sure works at Enid because even I caught some. :)
Everytime I pull crankbaits....the more I like it.....I got so busy catching fish the other day that I couldn't even drink a diet coke.
Now G3, Ya just cant let fishing interfear with your DRINKING! LOL
I didn't...... but I had to re light my cigar about 20 times, Lol.
Couldn't think of a better thread to celebrate my 100th post. I thought I couldn't have any more fun pulling cranks than the first time, but hey, it gets better, and better, and better.... Thanks Maj.
Ok WB, keep your mind on the subject.....
You are right... Pulling cranks is awesome.. Cost me a great deal of $$$ but i love it. I plan to pull cranks till I quit catching fish.. Hope to pull them till the lake freezes over.. ha..
DoubleG
and I was out there doing my best Deadliest Catch by busting through the ice over by Pelahatchie Bay
I was out there last winter when it was 25 degrees and was CATCHING fish
minner tipped jigs G. Me sitting there with my propane space heater tweenst my legs trying to keep warm and pulling in some nice fish out of the welfare hole. LOVE that time of year and the cold cold weather keeps alot of folks at home
Ya'll knock it off. How am I supposed to outpace this thread if ya'll keep yacking on it like a couple of old women?
Wannabe...
What kind of heater do you have DD? I have a Mister Heater it works good but if there is a lot of wind sometimes it will blow it out.
I never thought about a heater..... Hmmmmmmm....
it's a coleman. Just the head and stand, then you screw the bottle on it and light it. We had the wind problem at Washingtin this winter at the first FJ. Wouldn't stay lit for nothing and poor nessa froze son, let me tell ya
those heaters work good. Only thing you have to worry about is when you bring a fish in, make sure you don't let the line touch it or you'll be retying your setup. Don;t even ask me how I know that
I usually just set mine down on the lower floor of the boat and not up on the platform....that helps it stay lit better..... then I can use it to warm my hands up after sticking them in that cold minnow bucket etc.
