I got to see Ted's ipilot in action a couple of weeks ago and it's the bomb. I'm just starting to use my regular old outdated auto pilot (not even co-pilot, lol) for cranking since I added the 2nd battery a couple of weeks ago and I can't believe I waited this long to do it. It really helps a lot, it's like having a second person in the boat when you're alone, wonder if the GW would see it that way if I kept a few extra fish:).
Anyone try pulling them little panfish cranks? I fish some small oxbows that arent much over 9' for the most part. Thought a smaller shallow running crank might work better than dredgin the place with 200's or 300's.
Tried the 200's and smoked the gar on the oxbow i fished... And lost one of them little boogers to a stump
I picked up a dozen Grave Diggers in some interesting colors. They look like 300's size wise.
How do they compare in price?
I have used them and they will catch crappie.

I am fixing to order some Wiggle Warts from BPS...$3.95 ea.
Cheaper & catches fish=Better
I just read about the last 20 pages trying to catch up!!!! Love it!! Thanks fellas for posting so much about what works, don't work, and the overall fun. Maybe I can add a little later when I get busy on the water instead of at work.
Pulled for several hours today on the Rez but only got one small Crappie and two small cats. EZ went with me to see the i-pilot in action, I think he's hooked now.
once the thermacline set up. I'd catch maybe a couple but that was it. Time to pull out the spider rigging for early morning and the single pole for after say about 9:30 or so and hit the stumps. I've heard rumors about one person still wearing them out on cranks but it's only in one location. I ain't been on the rez in over a month though so I don;t know exactly where YET. I might go Sunday morning though
Just wanted yall boys to know that I stayed up way past my bedtime reading this whole dagumm thread and yall have me conviced this is what I need to be doing with my life!! LOL I am going to get some cranks and try out my home lake bc I really think that I could smack some slabs with this the rest of the summer and fall!!! Just got one ? for yall. The avg dept in my lake is around 14', grant it with some deep holes but should i try 200's or 300's?? Any suggestions would be appreciated greatly!!!
Pulled at the rez yesterday and the results could be a carbon copy of the last time I tried it here. I did find out that I have been fishing way too deep. I got to use two things yesterday that I had never used before though. A plug knocker (worked 2 out of 3 times) and spot lock on the i-pilot. Spot lock worked as advertised, had a pretty good wind but it kept me close enough to where my line was pretty much straight up and down so that I could concentrate on getting my baits back without worrying about where the boat was going. Every time I use the i-pilot I like it better. We'll be hearing about how t-man likes his in a few days.
i pulled for the 1st time yesterday on sardis. i quickly found out that its not the easiest way to fish by yourself. didnt have a clue what i was doing just going by what ive seen others do. wasnt very productive caught 2 crappie a cat and lost what looked like a giant cat. was still fun learned alot about it by screwing up.
Keep trying....it will get better, thats what they keep telling me. I am trying to learn also.
The more money you spend the easier it gets. One person is no problem if you get the I pilot on your TM.
im good with investing in fishing stuff but my wife doesnt like it so much. ive got a ton of bass rods that are all lengths that would work better than what i used the other day.
Saturday was my 4th time to pull cranks. Got a limit at Sardis. I almost find it easier by myself. Less to get in the way. Best advise I can give at this point, use several different colors. I found out quick, what colors worked and what didn't. Once I figured out my primary color, it was on! Now back to the bandit store for more!
FYI. The bait shop north of the spillway, Wallace's, sells them for $4.30 each. Has a pretty good selection too.
Empty,
Just a tip, we tried that deal where you get a bunch on one color, go to store and buy a bunch of those and then they quit biting that color. Hope your luck is better than mine when mass buying..

This is all in feet with 10lb mono and based on the Bandit Chart that is hard for some to read.

Gotcha....thanks
Was running some Bombers this weekend on 6lbs 8-10' models that I got down to 18' running 1.5 mph by gps. No line counter reels so guessing around 75' of line out. Thanks again.
When I get G-3 old, I'm going to have my doc install this thread into the ROM memory of my pacemaker. This dang thing just.....won't.......die!!!!!
Wannabe...
This is a really great thread that Maj started.
First batch of cranks I have bought and a guy had a deal on some at the Buck-a-rama over hear Saturday $2.50 each or less. Not the colors I wanted based on what everyone has been saying is the better colors, but figured while I am learning the color don't matter as much. Will start picking up more of a variety as time goes. Those Bombers have a good wiggle at 1.2-1.5 mph. Got my eye on some Storm, Wally, and Bandits for the near future too.
that chart is great, got me some line counters and wow get it in the right depth its a fun day.
Line counter reels is the way to go.
I fish with some boys that say "just throw it back there bout 30 yards, It dont matter" Lets just say theres a lotta days that they say..."the fish didnt bite much today"......consistency is the key my friend!
Boy Maj , this thread is a never ending one!
I would like to revise my origional thoughts about rods and reels for pulling cranks. Started off with one 10' & one 12' off each side but learned pretty quick that that setup didn't give me enough line separation and the tangles were many. I bought a pair of 8'ers and put the 12's in front, the 8's behind and run the 10's straight off the back of the boat, this gives me 4' of separation between all my rods. A do-over would see me forgo the 10'ers all together and instead, get 16'ers put them out front, 12'ers in the middle and 8'ers last. (I believe this is the setup that SatDoc1 and Torch use and we know they catch fish.) All my rods are BnM Pro Trollers and I think they are great, good action and very good backbone for those big cats and hangups. Now for the reels, I still like the Okumas but I think I would go the the 20 DX rather than the 15 DX, why?, they are a little wider, but not so much as to be heavy or in the way, and the extra width spreads the line out so it's not as apt to get behind the spool. I still like the 10lb Stren High Viz yellow. Maybe these thoughts will save someone some money, hope so.:)
