First of all I never claimed to be a pro at anything. I learned a lot of what I know about pulling cranks from members here. I also learned much more by getting on the water, making mistakes and losing gear, refining my tactics to the places I fish, and just having a good time doing it.It must be working because I've helped a bunch of friends learn the crankbait game and they catch fish doing it.
I'm sure somebody here has mentioned that most of the depth graphs and line-counters are calibrated with 10 pound mono. That could very well be why you are seeing a discrepancy in your readings. I never depend on my counters to do anything but allow me to put out the same amount of line that I did on the previous cast AND to allow me to stagger the distance that baits are running. I don't want 4 baits off the transom running anywhere close to the distance the bait next to them is running. I also don't depend on a chart to tell me exactly where my given bait will be running with a given amount of line out. Trial and error and making constant adjustments on my gear is the best guide you can use.
I think you are over-analyzing this crankbait thing. Get on the lake, drop some cranks over the side and have a good time doing it. Rocket science has nothing to do with it.

Have you got your reels with the same color coming off first, like all mine have blue coming off first. that helps a ton, dont want know odd ball thrown in the mix. Been fishing with a buddy a good bit of this summer and he has line counters and they do fine but I still like the Depth Hunter better.

Have never caught one of them on a crank, caught em in the river and it was tuff with the current.

Way to much thinking on dragging a bait threw the water. It's very simple. Going to explain how I do it and how you keep your cranks and catch fish. Use 12lb mono put 300' on your reels go to the lake let your crank out 300' and reel it up this makes your line tight on the spool. Now your ready to drag cranks. It's that simple. Do the same on all reels. Every trip as you begin to put cranks on check the first 4' of line for nicks and anything that doesn't feel smooth as you pull the line threw your fingers. Cut and retie if you feel any thing. That's all there is too it.
guys yall are getting me all wrong here.....i know how to pull cranks, or at least ive done it and caught some fish....all i simply wanted to know was how much line i needed to put on an okuma magda pro 20 in order for it to be accurate.....geez

Just fill the spool up within 1/16 of a inch from rim of the spool and you got it.......It will never be 100% accurate.....but it will be close.....main thing is consistancy. Now go fishing and catch a bunch lol.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.
