Long lining is getting it away from boat better as to catching more fish or just to run deeper? Also if fishing deeper to use less line I know you could do 1/4oz jigs with lot less line but do you think smaller jigs catch more fish cause of size or cause there further from boat?

After reading all the pages I understand now. Basically you gotta maintain .8-1.0 mph regardless and depending on depth of fish the size of jig you need to run that deep. Awesome thread for sure!

.8 to 1 mph is the starting point for me. Sometimes they want it faster. If they want it slower I break out my spidy rig.
You can run deep even with a 1/16 but I would pull a 3/32 or 1/8 oz jig. You could put out say 40' of line and with a 3/32 going at .08 you will have the jig around 8 to 10' deep, to get them deeper slow down. Throwing you jigs way out from the boat just helps to get the jigs away from the boat. Sometimes this helps on days with a slow bite and they jigs may run a little deeper. This is the reason you "HAVE" to spend time on the lake learning what you jigs are doing from your boat and setup. No two boats will be the same jig depth with the same combo used but you can take what we are telling you and have a great starting point.
1/4 oz jigs are going to run very deep and on turns you are going to hit the bottom without speeding up.

Ronnie...on a 'good throw' how deep will a single 1/4 jig run with 6# test5line at a speed @ .8mph? I've never pulled any although I have add a weight about the same size of a 1/4 jighead to a 1/16th jig.
Butch they will run 15' to 18' deep on my boats setup at that speed. Got to think about it, a 1/4 oz jig is 4 - 1/16 oz jigs

Trying to learn myself.!! Thanks
Just read Stump Hunter's post dated Feb. 2013 . The tip for using the line stop to keep up with the distant the line is out, sounds great, I've never thought of using it for that. I've only used it for jigging over brush.
