I have seen a lot concerning hardware and setups. Question I have is this. I know about seasonal patterns and movement of crappie and depths. What I want to know is the area you go is it random trolling or targeted trolling? Do you troll over the channel or channel ledges? In flats is there something you like to consistent troll over or path taken. I now have a Minn Kota Terrova and can record tracks. Shall I record the ledges? I guess what I am trying to say is how do you determine what path to take trolling?

CK........... I'm no expert but think trolling for any predator fish is basically the same............ concentrate on ledges, points, creek channels, ditches and road beds. different tactics will work better depending on the water temp. and what the fish are doing........Others opinions are likely to vary.

I had to opportunity to fish with Butch (Gabowman) who is about as good as they get when it comes to long lining. I will let him elaborate on his methods, but two things were key to his success.
    1. He found the fish on his DF before he ever wet a hook.
    2. He knew what depth the fish were in and he knew exactly how deep his jigs were running,

When you know the fish are there and you know you are pulling a jig in front of their nose, you usually catch fish, and he does.

I use the 1/4 oz hair jigs double rigged 18in apart I'm fishing 18-25 fow trolling .8-1.0 with 10lb braid guess I'm not actually long lining cause it doesn't take but 30-35 ft of line usually in 20fow to run within couple feet from bottom. Is the purpose of lighter jigs to get more line out further away from the boat?

Yes I always start off looking at what depth fish are at. Ok So I see what depth fish are at go to my side scanner and look for bait. Then travel down the paths moving crappie take. Thanks Ill start with that and learn.

You will have to make a new thread on the boats mechanic forum. A post on a thread can not be moved to another forum. You can copy your post and paste it on your new thread. I will delete the post after you make your new thread, just let me know when.
