Got to store by the casino a little before 7:00 and they didn't have any minnows. Really...a calm Saturday morning, and no minnows!!Instead of backtracking to the shell station down the road, I just put in and used jigs. No keepers, but pulled in 12 - 15 dinks, a couple Sandies, and one real nice largemouth (on a roadrunner). I could see fish in several locations, and think I would have finally had a good day, if I would have had minnows! I can't catch a break.
Guess i'll have to try again tomorrow morning...![]()
Yeah, I run four poles total...two poles with double minnows and two poles with double jigs (sometimes minnow tipped, sometimes not). I am trying to get better with jigs so I can avoid always paying for minnows. I'm just not that good yet. I know that minnows will at least guarantee I catch a few each trip. I still kinda suck at this fishing business. Need some more learnin'!
There have been big schools of silversides all over lately so catching your own with the cast net is a breeze. I don't often use minnows myself but when I bring my little brother out and the bite is slow on artificials, its nice to have a dependable backup when I can see the disappointment welling up haha
I use it all. Artificial, live and artificial with live. I'm not committed to one or the other.
Well, if you gotta have minners - get BIGGUNS!

Most trips I bring 1 doz minnows -- just in case it's a minnow day. Most days I catch on both, and jigs out-catch minnows BIG TIME. About 2 outta 10 trips I'll catch 'em on jigs when they won't touch the minnow. But about 1 out of every 10 trips is what I call a "minnow day," where you can't buy a bite with jigs, and that's when I'm glad I have the minnows.
Other reason I try to have a doz minnow/trip: probing. On days when you have to put a jig right on their nose to get a bite, they'll still chase a minnow 3-4 feet. So if I'm jigging a while in one place w/o a bite, I'll convince myself to stay and try diff depths...but if I'm jigging that same amount of time while a minnow is over the side of the boat w/o a bite -- then it's time to move! Ain't no crappie there!

caught about 40 Saturday evening and again sunday evening long line trolling jigs along the road bed and the dam. maybe 5 over 10" all weekend. caught some nice sandies and one 20" saugeye too. water was 78 degrees
We went out yesterday and fished the dam and didn't even get a bite. Can someone point me in the right direction? We did fish a cove past the marina and there were a bunch of pontoons tied off, I assume for catfish and we fished to opposite side of them and not one bite. I didn't stop and get minnows but was fishing with a black and chartreuse tube jig and nada! Thanks in advance!
