I use the store bought variety and haven’t had a problem catching crappie. I fish Aquilla, Alvarado, Cleburne, Arlington, Waxahachie, and Squaw Creek (Squaw Creek for talapia). A 1/32oz non-painted jig head paired with whichever brand “stinger” tail that you like.
I generally have four rods out while spider rigging this time of year. I’ll tie two jigs on each rod. The top jig will be tied with a palomar knot while the bottom uses a simple loop knot.
I’ll usually use a wide variety of colors when I first hit the water. The fish will let me know what works best.
My last trip was to aquilla. I always buy a couple dozen minnows when I take a fishing trip. The crappie didn’t want any jig I was offering that day. The minnows were the ticket!
I guess the point of my rambling is to say that there is no “best” when it comes to crappie fishing. Find what you like to work with and get good at using it.
