Thread: Longlining Questions?

I always forget to hook my line on the stop. Dont remember until Ive caught one and was ready to recast. Then I just make a good solid cast because that is the way I did it the first time.

Does anyone use 3 jigs on each rod? Was thinking about running a 1/16, 1/32, 1/32 combo. Maybe switch the 1/16 with a 1/8 and the last 1/32 with a dressed hook or wooly booger. Also a 1/16, 1/24, 1/32. Should give me slightly different running depths within 2-3 feet I'm guessing.

You may be heading for a heartache with three on one line, heck I don't like to run two on a line because of the wrapping around the main line. I would rather run more rods out the boat to have more hooks in the water if that is what I'm after but each fisherman has their own way they like to longline. I have pulled a many of double hooks on a line but just don't like doing it.

Ok just got my 2014 Terrova 55 thrust Ipilot installed. Brush fishing is my first love now its time for a mistress. Subject flatline. I have went through this post and thank you for all the info. I have a general idea how to go about this. I use braided line for tightlining it's nice and easy to pull off of the hangups. Flatline it would seem you would want the line to break because you have to keep on going. So I think 6 pound mono would work. Any braid users out there?
Also anybody use the roadrunners? Seems the extra flash would help. I have a bunch of 1/32 and 1/16 left from days past.
I just did not seen much talk about braid vs mono or using roadrunners.

Wouldn't suggest using roadrunners if you fish clear water lakes. The flash seems to turn off crappie and you catch a lot more bass. I fish Lake Lanier and it's hard to catch em on RR's. I don't use braid long lining. I'd hate to try and pull it loose and get cut. That could be painful! Why spend the money on braid anyway. You could buy 6lb braid but seems like a waste. I use 6lb hi-vis main line with 4lb fluoro leader.

Some real valid points here I did not consider. Sure do not want to catch those pesky Green Carp to mess up the lines. I fish lake Wylie so its a mixed bag on clarity. Point taken on roadrunners. I see you use the hi vis for the mail line for visibility and fluro for leader. Is the leader about 3 feet? You can go probably 25 feet of flouro because that much would be under water.

CK, I've used RR's off and on but cannot tell you I caught all that many crappie off of 'em. I did catch some fish but IMO jigs out preformed the RR's most all of my trips. In all fairness though, I really havent gave the RR's alot of fishing time and when I have used them it was only like 1 or 2 out of the 12-14 lines I pull.

As far as line, dont think I've heard of anyone trying braid. You'd have to have some very good eyes to see that small diameter line to straighten out all the tangles youre gonna get while longlining.
Whichever line you decide to use you'll have to see what depth your jigs run because line size will make a difference.
