Would other things, like a twig or stick or whatever fool it into thinking that there is a fish? You can turn that feature off, and fish are then indicated by a eyebrow shaped curved line on the screen. So which is better? The fish symbol or just the curved lines to indicate fish? Or does it make any difference?

Those fish symbols are very unreliable. Your unit is good. It will show anything in the water column as fish tho. Turn them off and go with the arches. They're more reliable. I started with the less expensive units but as I was able to afford the better units, i'd upgrade and sell the older unit. It's true that you get what you pay for when it comes to electronics for fishing. The newer units take a lot of the guesswork out of identifying fish and are so much easier to view. Learn to understand what you're seeing on the one you have and you'll get better with it. Upgrade when you can. A color unit with gps is the bomb.

    Gill Fisher,
The 565 should show the sonar returns even when it is showing the Fish ID Symbol. So you can use the Fish ID feature to help determine what is or is not a fish and at the same time; learn how the unit displays fish so that you can turn the Fish ID feature off at a later date. Not everything between the surface of the water and the bottom of the lake is shown with a Fish ID Symbol as the unit is programmed to look for some additional information to help determine what is and is not a fish – but it can be fooled. If you think that the unit is showing too many Fish ID Symbols you can adjust the Fish ID Sensitivity menu to a lower setting or simply turn the feature off. Some us the Fish ID feature and others don’t. Like all menu settings, it really gets back to personal preference.

It all falls back on what you get used too and having the confidence that it's putting you on fish. High dollar units are not needed just nice to have. If you getting on fish with the unit you have then it's doing what you needed it to do. good luck

What type of knot do you guys prefer for your hook? Palomar feeding the tag end through the eye to the sinker, loop knot, 3 way with a leader, etc...? If a guy can get away with a #2 aberdeen tied direct with a palomar and a drop shot sinker, it would be much more simple.

    Thank you!

CR for gills I just use a loop knot, this is the same set up for the crappie so I never changed to anything else. Fishing that deep for gills was new to me until these guys helped me get on them and getting past those little guys is what made me try the drop shot rig. Fast and simple to throw together.

Ive heard that if you have a 3-6" leader coming off the main line for the hook it's not considered a snag rig anymore since the weight isn't off the hook. Of your in a state that doesn't allow drop shot rigs thi may be a way around it.

I tie a palomar leaving about 2' tag end, then a simple splitshot anywhere from 12-24" down from the hook. When fishing in timber/downed trees, having the splitshot pinched on the line will help with hang-ups. Slow steady pull either straightens the hook, or lets the splitshot slip off of the line. I lost 3-4 splitshots yesterday, but better than retying the whole shebang.
