I tie a palomar leaving about 2' tag end, then a simple splitshot anywhere from 12-24" down from the hook. When fishing in timber/downed trees, having the splitshot pinched on the line will help with hang-ups. Slow steady pull either straightens the hook, or lets the splitshot slip off of the line. I lost 3-4 splitshots yesterday, but better than retying the whole shebang.
