When the regulations on the books can't be properly enforced now, why would we want more restrictive regs that would only apply to those who chose to abide by them?

I think somebody has too much time on their hands.

I personally don't keep any female redears that I catch. Do I want to see that forced on everyone? NO!

Better yet, why don't we ask KY F&W to restrict fishing to OOSers to the 2nd weekend of each month and every Tuesday and Wednesday?

First of all people should obey all rules of the lake. Second of all you have to start somewhere.

At the current rate that people are catching and keeping fish, future generations will not be able to enjoy the good fishing we have now.

Under this proposal people could still keep a few crappie/bass each day, but not as many as they can now. At least not during the spawn or pre spawn.

And to me it is very clear that increasing the crappie size limit to around 12 inches would greatly help improve crappie numbers on KY Lake.

It's the same thing with deer hunting. Areas with a 1 buck rule, usually see an increase in the number of bucks, and an increase in the age of the bucks.

Even if this rule was only in effect for a few years, that would greatly increase the bass and crappie fishing at the lake.

Another good example would be Dale Hollow lake. I believe Dale Hollow has a 21 inch size limit on smallmouth bass. And I believe you can only keep 1 or 2 smallmouth bass per day.(My numbers may be a little off on Dale Hollow, but I know my numbers are very close.):D

As a result Dale Hollow is ranked as one of the top 10 best Smallmouth fishing lakes in America.

Just kidding, but you would have said the same thing to me, if I would have said that to you.

Let's all just be open minded, and listen to eachothers ideas. We don't all have to agree with eachother and that's fine.

Let's all just be glad that we live in a state as good as Kentucky where we have great hunting and fishing opportunities.

Have a great hunting and fishing season.

You talk about bringing in the tourist. Just yesterday someone posted that they saw some outof staters cleaning several fish below the 10" size limit. If they can't inforce it now then how in the world do you think they are going to do it then..
Take you kids fishing today!!! They will be grown (and married and have children of their on) tomorrow. Then you can take your GRANDKIDS!

I just want to point out a few things.

    1. You are for limiting the #'s/size during the spawn. I know you haven't been in Ky. long but they already do that. 20 fish 10". Last year on Mar. 1st the new 20 fish limit was implimented. You haven't even given that program a year to work and already wanting to lower it some more?

    2. Your arguement that we could just do it for 3 months out of the year. If I have a herd of cattle and decide I'm not gonna kill any during the calving season it ain't gonna help a bit cause kill'n a reproducer is kill'n a reproducer no matter when it's done. Next thing you know somebody's gonna suggest we buy tags. Yep tag the fish and call them in like we do the deer and turkey. Hey it's an idea.

    3. You said that even if this idea was just implimented for a few year it would greatly increase the fish populations. That sir is pure speculation. No one has the ability to see into the future. You are assuming that wold happen. There are other factors involved.

    4. As for the bass... I could give a flip. You can't crappie fish for the darn things now. Ky Lake is already managed for the bass. They eat crappie and you want to get more and bigger bass in the lake so they can eat more and bigger crappie. I clean darn near every 1 I catch for that reason.

This kinda stuff ain't gonna hurt anybody but the little guy and turn crappie fish'n into a rich man's game just like they are trying to do with everything else. Steel shot my a$$. That stuff has wasted more birds that all the eagles lead ever killed!

Simply no. I am an out of stater but have fished the lake for years. I was there this weekend on Jonathan and noticed a boat keeping a number of smaller fish. Made it obvious to them that I was checking every close fish and mentioned the limit to them. I don't know what they ended up doing with their fish. The kdfwr does a good job of managing this fishery in my opinion and I will let them handle the regulations. As a person that only fishes the lake six or eight times a year I struggle to catch a limit a day as it is and usually don't. We caught 15 keepers between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning (me and my fiance) but three of them went over two pounds which is why I come back. Learn more every time.

I try to understand why some guy would want to make changes to something that hasn't been given a chance to work but i just dont get it. Last season you could keep 30 crappies. This season, 20. Now you think it should be lower? After not even one season? I travel 650 miles each way to visit Ky lake, once each year. Dont care if i limit on crappie or bass anymore now than i did when i first started coming down back in the 80's. I'm fishing to relax and enjoy my time away from home. Not everybody that visits this lake is a crappie hog. I like bluegills and redears. Last year i was fortunate enough to catch and keep my limit of crackers two days in a row. That was plenty to take home. Lasted me all winter. Most were females and after posting pictures was told maybe i should have thrown some back. Point taken. When i come down this year, if all i'm catching is females, i'll definately lower my keeper number. Thank you for the heads up, Mr Dux. Point taken.

No. I support the guys with the extra letters past their names doing the regulating. What they say is good for me.

If it bothers you personally, then by all means throw back the fish that you catch.

We have fisheries biologists in every region that conduct netting and shocking surveys to monitor fish populations. I'm sure their research is what influenced the decision to reduce the limit on the Kentucky portion of the lake to 20.

I honestly think they have a good grasp on the current state of our fisheries. Now, I'm not sure if TWRA is doing the same thing or not. Regardless, I think we should follow their recommendations that are based on data they are collecting in the field. If there is a poor spawn and the creel needs to be lowered, then I'll support it and abide by it. But as for now, despite all the pressure the Lake gets, there are still plenty of fish swimming around in Kentucky Lake.

As for Bass, I very rarely see anyone keeping a Bass. It's almost as if it's become a sin to do so. I would keep one every now and then, but honestly don't like to eat them. Given the atttitude of most bass fishermen who get all bent out of shape if you keep a bass, the bass fishing on Kentucky Lake should be entering it's "hay day" especially with the grass coming back.

If you want to worry about anything with the state of our fisheries, rather than be overly concerned about people following the regulations and keeping the number of fish they are allowed, you should worry about these evasive species that are beginning to take hold in our waterways. You mention bass and crappie fishing in the future, you may be watching Asian Carp tournaments on television twenty years from now.
