What to start with?

Hi to all, I'd like to start tying again but with no mentor or direction a trip to the store can end up with a bunch of not needed stuff that looked good on the shelf. I enjoy breaking out the table to spin some tread but just really have no idea of what to focus on. I've tied some simple patters for smallmouth,largemouth and bream. But now I'm kinda of lost on what size and style hooks/jig heads to buy as well as materials to buy. I would really be thankfull for any help. I see some really nice looking ties on here----Thanks!!!

Start in the stickys above the post. Then there are places that are listed to buy what you need. Look thur the pictures and get a idea of what patterns that you would like to try. then make a list and buy only what you need to keep your cost down. If you buy what you want it can get pricey.

Stump Hunter on our SC forum really ties some great jigs. He would be a good source for patterns for SC lakes. He has several posts on the jig tying forum and has a website I believe. I ordered some from him but it was a while back and I can't remember how I came up with what I ordered. Anyway he is an excellent tier and a good source for info. I know just enough to be dangerous when it comes to tying. I tie mostly some little gnats for fly fishing for bream.

Hey SeaRay, thanks again for your help! I have seen some of his post, it is really art work that puts food on the table! I really enjoy tying but sometimes feel as I'm just tying instead of creating a true fishing tool! It is still loads of fun though with the childern trying to interact with you as they are chasing tread bobbins across the floor or marabou or hakle floating across the floor! HaHa

Hey SeaRay, thanks for the help once again! I have seen some of his work on the site and it is true art work that puts food on the table!!! Thanks form the great pics. I love to ty but sometimes I feel as I'm just tying to be tying instead of really tying to make a fly/jig that is really a proven pattern. I always get a kick at my kids enthusiasum to help that turns into chasing thread bobbins, hakle and marabou across the floor!HaHa

Read all you can, but I learned a lot from the lessons at FAOL and suggest you look at them. Even though it's flies they are tying it's still chenille your tying in or what ever the material is, it's done the same. Also make sure you do get a Thompson Whip Finish Tool and get the other kind. Stump Hunter and Skiptomylu, Thanks for your help! I'm really looking foward to breaking out the table and vice again. I really enjoy tying but in the past at times I felt like I was just tying to be tying and it helped my skills with all the materials and the basics.Now I'm really looking foward to having some direction and focus, and also like I'll be tying something that really works!! I really like how helpfull everyone is on this site some sites are not as friendly or as eager to help out as yall are! Thanks again!!
