Default Did I read this correctly

Hello folks, I have been doing alot of research on the terrova I pilot. In the new BPS catalog it mentioned about the sonar unit being inside the unit. Ok so I did some looking around and went to Minn kota site and it looks like they are mounting them inside the motor unit. So it looks like it is going to be smooth unit on the outside.

So does anyone know for sure about this and has anyone seen any in stores yet. I am going to buy one soon but would like to know if I need to wait for the new ones to come out.

    Thanks
    Clint

Are you refering to the Universal Sonar? If so this is just the transducer mounted inside the motor and requires a specal cable to match it to your sonar unit. You need to make sure it is compatible.

You have to get the Terrova models that have US2.....that is the sonar transducer. It will work with most HB, and Lowrance units. This built in transducer is for 2-D sonar.....so if you hook a side imaging unit to it all it will show is 2D sonar. Some folks like them....others would rather use their own transducer that goes with their fishfinder. When I buy my Terrova, I intend to get the model with the US2 built in transducer

Thanks for the replys, maybe I should have been a little more clearer. From what I understand the US2 sonar TD was basicly a moulded piece of the motor housing that protruded from the bottom of the motor unit somewhat simular to the skag on the motor housing.

From what I was reading, the new ones are intergall, or inside the motor housing. (From what I am told the Motorguides are this way) So that the Td is not protruding from the bottom. I guess the reason I am asking is because when I get the the HB 798 HD SI, the TD wont fit on the bottom of the TM because ot the universal sonar would be in the way. *This I have read on here that it is too long to fit both.

So I would have to buy the TM with out the TD. But if it (TD) is inside the motor unit I can get the Universal and still fit the SI TD on the motor.

    Thanks for the help

OK....here is what they all tell me. Side imaging will not work with the US2. Side imaging really should not be on your TM anyway because of all the turning of the motor your images would be blurred. Also the side imaging works best at speeds from 3 to 5 mph. The US2 is integral with the Terrova motor housing....the ones that I have seen have a slight pertrusion. One went out on a friends TM and he fastened another transducer to the TM with a large hose clamp. If you hook the US2 to your side imaging FF all you are going to show is 2D....it will not side image because it is a 2D transducer

Lotta money to just handicap yourself as far as electronics. Not real sure about the newer models, but theres only a decent percentage of units that will work with it. No SI and I'm unsure of the DI from what I've read. I'd get the one without the built-in myself, but theres always exceptions. On a positive note, I know some guys that really limited there success because of their racing on the TM, 45*angles on a "tightline". Now they're on some fish, being able to hold still. Even bragging about replacing their 20 yr old electric knives.

There's a lot of threads on here that talk about the "noise" that the US2 causes and you need to add ferrets to the line to cover it up. Seems like a problem that could be avoided by just putting a TD on the TM and saving the extra cost of the US2 JMO

Ok folks, THanks for the replys, but I must not be asking the correct question or the question correctly. I have read and read a lot threads on here and I did learn a few of the things you have mentioned. I am aware of the down falls of the us2 and also that you can not use it with SI. I also appreciate the suggestion to just use the factory TD.

Maybe I should put it this way. Forget that I am going to use a Fish finder at all.

What I am trying to ask is on the bottom of the Minn kota Terrova with US2 with I pilot. At the bottom of the drive motor is the TD still sticking out the bottom, somewhat like a second skag, or is the TD mounted inside the motor housing, so that the only thing on the bottom, or outside the motor housing is the skag? I think that it is inside now but I havent been able to confirm it.

Thanks for the help and I hope I explained it better.

As I understand his question, he is asking if the bump shown in the picture is gone from the latest model of that motor. I don't know but maybe someone with the latest motor may see this. Or Rescue you might try calling their customer service tech line.
