    Angry Getting it up


    I ordered a new prop today for my 40 evilrude. :D I am having great difficulty getting it up on plane. I have to move my fishing partner to the front of the boat then it comes up fine and goes like a scalded cat. When I am alone, it comes up slowly and then porpuses so wildly I have to back down to slow speed. I took the prop to Dave's Boats, and he said the prop was badly out of kilter and was knicked in several places (it was that way when I got it). So I ordered a new prop (11 3/4 x 17), and it should be in this week. I hope that cures the problem. If not my only other option would be to go to a power tilt and trim which is expensive, or keep moving my fishing partner to the front of the boat. Maybe I'll just go slow and save a bunch of money.:p Anyone else have this problem? My boat is a 17.5' Alumaweld Xpress, with a gross wgt of 1200 pounds.

    Oh btw, I put out three stake beds the other day and have three more ready to go. Have to wait till the lake lice are not so thick after the holiday.

    So just I understand this correctly, the x17 means a 17 pitch prop meaning 17 rounds per 1 foot of travel. Correct???? Anyone??

    well from what I know about prop pitch. The lower number on the pitch gives better hole shot pulls a better load. The higher the pitch the more top end speed you'll get out of it. but one thing you have to remember is what ever the manufacture suggest for your particular motor is the one that will perform the best and not over rev the engine. you have to watch your rpm's. you can over rev an engine pretty easy when you lower the pitch on your prop from the manufactures recommended. I use a 19 pitch most of the time on my 85 hp. but when i take the kids skiing i use a 13 pitch to get them out of the water quicker but I dont ever run the boat more than 2/3 throttle to prevent over reving the motor.

    Pitch means (in this case) 17" of forward movement with no slipage in one 360 turn. Smallier prop means more power less top end, bigger pitch means more speed. BUT, to much pitch might means that your motor never builds the HP that your motor should. I have seen where someone put to big of prop on the boat and the boat would not pull out of the hole. Try a smaller pitch wheel and your boat will jump out of the hole and fly.

    if you don't have tilt and trim check out the CMC after market tilt and trim. This unit will do wonders for you. Give you a jack plate and tilt and trim. Better gas milage, better hole shot.

    flyfinger you might want to look at the pitch of your motor in relation to the back of the boat.If its tilted away from the bottom of the boat it could be causing the porposing to keep the front end down you want it tilted back towards the boat one hole from staight up and down this will help you keep the front down when trying to get on plane but it will take away from the top end speed.

    17p seems VERY high for a 40 hp? Was that what you had on it?

    I went from 13p to 14p on my Merc 40 and it was a mistake. I have to trim the motor constantly to get good performance. Maybe Evinrudes are geared different?

    Me too except, I like my 14 pitch on my Merc. I was amazed that my stick steer would pull a tube with rider using a 14. I can tell it takes a little bit more effort to get it going. But, planing is no problem. I think any thing larger would not be a good idea.

    The 17 pitch was what was on it when I got it, and the book for evilrude indicates this is the recommended prop. But, if that does not work, I'll try a smaller pitch prop and keep this one for a spare. Thanks for the info guys. I did look at CMC aftermarket tilt and trim, but the one in Cabella's and in Bass Pro catalogs one says it is only good up to 35 hp. Above that they recommend a biger tilt and trim unit. I think financially, maybe the lesser pitch prop is the way to go. Also the rpm indicator on the dash is nonfunctional, I think maybe this is motor was a replacement for whatever came on the boat and the tac and other gauges were never hooked up.

    Fly , I have an old (20 YO) Alumaweld 16 v48 and run a 70 hp Yamaha . Used to have a 90 hp Johnson motor on it. I run two batteries in the front compartment for the trolling motor . That holds it down fine.

    You need to look at the CMC pt-130. Its good all the way up to 130hp motors. As to what pitch you should run, I am not sure what evinrude recommends for that motor. I know I run a 14 pitch on my merc 40, on a 16'50" express and it runs pretty good. I am looking into getting the cmc 130 for my boat to maybe get a little extra out of it.
