I am by no means an expert. But ill tell my 2 cents worth. To see the thermocline turn your senssurgery up . To late this year. Side imaging require a little imagination . I done think anyone knows for sure they are seeing crappie. If you are on structure that should hold crappie chances are some of what you see are. I learned to use mine by scanning things I knew were there and what they looked like. And compared it to what it looked like on the screen. Ive been lucky to fish with guys who know a lot more about it than I do who helped me learn to use mine. Ronny Capps says Play with it. Thats what all those buttons are for. Hope this helps.

Went to a Humminbird seminar at Grizzly last year and that's the one thing they stressed.....you can't break it pushing buttons. They encouraged us to just get on the water and experiment with it and don't be afraid to push the buttons!!! I agree with Blackfish about identifying crappie. If it's a brush pile you are looking at and you see a bunch of white dots like Christmas tree lights, it's probably crappie. But I know of no way to specifically look at a group of fish in the water on a side imager and say which ones are crappie and which ones are not. Size would probably rule out some, but other than that, I don't know.
My wife keeps saying I never listen to her....... or something like that!

I think there is only a thermocline during the summer months and in deep water lakes for the most part, don't know about seeing it on a si , but in di, you will see a distinct line off the bottom that looks similar to the bottom it will be a little different color

You can see the thermocline in this di shot. It starts at about 22ft.

This is some early spring crappie stacked on vertical structure. I even left the coordinates on the screen shot. The red arrows point toward the crappie. The chartreuse is a sinker connected to the old man in the blue jump suits cane pole.
