I learned to use mine by scanning things I knew were there and what they looked like. And compared it to what it looked like on the screen. I think there is only a thermocline during the summer months and in deep water lakes for the most part, don't know about seeing it on a si , but in di, you will see a distinct line off the bottom that looks similar to the bottom it will be a little different color
