I have seen people in a jon boat that mount the tranducer on a rod attached to a C-Clamp; they gan drop it over the side of the boat anywhere. As for the fish finder a Humminbird 570 dual beam with down image is very good; about $500; with spilt screen you can see structure on one and fish on the other.
