    Default Braid

I'd like to give my thoughts on braided lines or the two I've used, power pro 10/2 and spiderwire EZ 10/3.
I've only been useing braid for about 3 months and as it stands I'll never go back to the cat gut lines.I NO longer have to watch the line for the bite b/c I can feel the thump when they inhale the bait.On cat gut lines all I could feel was a tick at the jig or twitch of the line when they inhale. To me the hook up with braid on the thump is unreal, instant hook up and they haven't time to spit it out. Most times when crappie inhale their food they do it with a little force as to suck it in and spit it out if its not to their liken. With cat gut lines the force will strength the line at the jig head a few inches up the line before you feel the tick or see line movement. That small strenght in cat gut will give them time to spit it out.No so with braid,it seems like they hook them selfs on the inhale force.I love to feel that THUMP you get with braid when the bait is inhaled. Its hard to go to sleep some nights b/c you can still feel that hard hit THUMP lol.Not only that but I don't haveta retie like I did with cat gut lines, seems the knot will last forever lol.
If you have never used braid like me give it a try,I'm a THUMPER now and not a ticker.
MY Q'tion is do they make other braids other then power pro and spiderwire?

When you say cat gut, I assume you are referring to monofilement. I can see your point when you are holding the rod; however I fail to see the advantage when spider rigging. I think I will run a trial by using mono on half of my rods and braid on the other. Thanks for the info.

Been runnin braid for a few years now, love it. Threr is one braid I havent tried but hear it is good also FINS Shock Absorbing Braid may order some to try. But I do agree it is much better than "cat gutt".

    Sat,

I just now started using fireline 6/2 on a 11ft b n' m and there is no comparison for single pole fishing. Now trolling mite be different. I used it yesterday for the first time and in some thick brush and it killed. Awesome hooksets (love that sound braid and superline has when u set the hook) and of 25 fish I only missed 2-3 yesterday and they werent exactly tearing the bait up. Its gonna be a staple for me from now on, I need to try some of those braids too. Still need mono from time to time.

I knew today wasn't a good fishing day so I ran alittle late getting to the lake,I also knew I had the vantage if the hit was light...on the lake at 8.45.
I know of a honey hole with pan size crappie, game plan was pick one color and stay with it all day.Picked 6 colors for the test, throwed first color to the honey hole thump pan size crappie, each color I made 4 cast to see which was the best.Out of the 6 colors two where just niddle niddle niddle all the way to the boat but 4 colors where thumpers lol.Okay game plan was set to use one rod and one color lure all day,as I turned the trolling motor on to spin around to leave the honey hole I seen another boat.Dam those new outboard motors can sneak up on a feller lol,he said he started fishing at daylight and had 3 small bass. After we talked about his new motor he said he hadn't caught any bream or crappie but noticed I was catching something. He said he loved pan size crappie and would love to have a mess.We caught 20 pan size out of dat honey hole before he said that was enough.Anyway I enjoyed the day and came home with a nice cooler of crappie, bream and bass.I would not have caught 1/2 as much as did if it not been for useing braid.I also bendt my hook a little to one side of the jig head to help with the lite hits, seemed to work better then running true with the jig head.
I cann't under stand why the honey hole is aways good nomatter if you cann't catch another fish in the whole lake, its aways hot with pan size.

The two braids I mentioned above both throw off the reel good and line twist does not seem to be a problem.Going to haveta find something to cut it with besides my clippers for a clearer cut.Plus I did not have to retie not one time and with cat gut I would had to retie several times today.

Thanks Turtlebait 4 asking your ? about braid, I have been wanting to ? the same question. I have used it quite a bit 4 bass but very little on a jig pole. I add one thing to the discussion, dont waste your $ on suffix braid . I like their mono but the braid has too large a diameter

As of now only problem I see in it is me, I do not WANT to stop fishing,I WANT TO GO fishing EVERYDAY from daylight to dark.I cann't sleep at night,I twist and roll b/c I can still feel the thump and hear the braid singing its song to me when fish on.The braid on a Z02 sounds just like bill's baitcaster when he fighting green carp when he's useing braid.Even the little 11 spincast has its own personal sound and feel lol.I tried braid years ago but like most people back then went with a bigger test when I should have.I had problems with it back days ago when bass fishing and never could tie that knot worth a hoot. When I told my fishing partner I was going to try braid he advised me to get 30/8 which I did.Him being a first class bass fisherman he thought thats what I should use.So much for bass fishing fisherman thinking they know everything,it worked ok on the 11 and Z02 but I wasn't after 30 lb. fish.Sneaked off to the fishing store without fishing partner and got me some 10/2 and 10/3.This stuff is like a dream come true to me,would you believe I'm still useing the same rod and SAME knot as the day before.I fish alot of brush and get hung up at times when I miss judge a spot. With mono I had to retie offen b/c the line knot would not standup to that kind of treatment.Plus sometimes a 2 lb. BIG green carp would break my line when useing cat gut.Don't get me wrong I've landed some big fish with 4lb. cat gut but the brush will weaken it in short order. For the last two days I've only fished with one rod one color lure and 10/2 braid.I have caught several fish, hung up in brush and trees with the same knot. That right there is a blessing to me plus the extra treat you get with feel and sound not to for that THUMP with instant hookup.
I'm not trying to sale this stuff just my thoughts only,it will cost more to spool your reels. In the long run I think the cost will be cheaper b/c I respool with cat gut several times a year.Heck I don't know but this stuff may last for years b/c its just now showing some wear around the knot.

Thursday I changed rods and used the one with 10/3 spiderwire, for 3 days I used 10/2 powerpro.10/3 Whole new ballgame in casting distance, had to rejust to the extra distance b/c of over throwing the jig into brush to much.Same lenght rod and Z02 reels as to compair 10/2 powerpro to 10/3 spiderwire to its handling on spincast reels.I like the 10/3 but have run into a problem after catching a fish,on the next cast it wants to hang/catch in the reel as to not cast as far.The problem is short lived tho but it happens ever time I catch a fish on the 10/3,its a small problem I can live with.
Both braids have been outstanding in landing bigger fish like Drum, grinnel, gar that would have broken off if useing mono.My catch rate has increased while useing braid in hookups and lost fish b/c of line str.& knot failure in mono.

When I cleaned the crappie today all the slads had small frogs in them,I have a small crankbait frog if I had known.Thats what I like about crappie fishing you never really know from day to day that they want to feed on.May just get my flashlight and go see if I cann't find a can full of small frogs tonight lol.

I have used braid and like several things about it but for some reason I prefer a clear line. Just a warning; don't use it if you have hay fever or a cold. If you sneeze it's gonna get tangled, LOL.

I use Power Pro 8/30 on my line counter reels for pulling crankbaits. I use Power Pro 2/10 on my rods that I long line troll road runners. Landed a 25+ lb cat on the 2/10 this past spring.
