Today I hooked a gar what has taken my lure several times this year,days before while trying to get my lure out of his mouth after what seemed like a 30 min. battle he would break my line on his last dash for freedom.Not to day bady I got my lure with needle nose while he lay resting at boat side,I said a few words to him as he swam off(that was braid mr gar) lol.
Years ago monofilament which was like a elastic band and was all you could buy,it was also prune to nicks and cuts.Then came alone briad we all know what briad was like back then junk.Then came fluorocarbon with low stretch abrasion resistant and invisible what more could a feller ask for.Over the years each line has improved in their weakness and limpness.Alot of fisherman what fishes for everything in the lake will have 3 different line types for each a purpose.
Like mono and fluoro braid has also improved on extremely in limpness,diameter and tuffness.I've been useing the same knot for several days now,it was looking frayed before the gar battle today.The line and knot has stood up more than expected,just in case tho I cut off 10ft of line off and tied a new knot.You never know mr gar looked P'd when he swim off b/c he didn't have a lure to show his buddies,he may try again.

What about using braid in clear water lakes for crappie? I know it is suppose to be camo and could probably be used at night, but would it scare 'em during the day?

Don't really know whether it spooks fish in clear water or not,all I can say is we fished clear water today and I caught more then my partner.Matter fact I caught several more of crappie,bass and bream b/c the hit was light.Meet three other boats and they said they were not doing any good,winds are still out the east.
I have braid on all my reels now but for the last two weeks I've been useing only two of them.One with power pro and one with spiderwire,the pickup pins on a spincast will do damage to the spiderwire(frayed)plus it sorta turned a whiteness color.Altho with the damage it will still handle a big fish without breaking plus still cast good.The only other thing I had againest spiderwire was over casting with it.Don't know if I could ever ajust to the extra distance you get with spiderwire,that stuff just flys off your reel.
AS of now power pro is the one I staying with,its holding up good,haven't noticed a color change.It cast good the reverting is as smooth as butter and the THUMP of the hit is is is is wow unreal.Its extremely limp and I have never seem a line twist in it,all I can say is its what I've been looking for.With the cat gut lines I was always retieing my knot thoughout the day and nicks and cuts sometimes a small fish would break it.With braid I may not tie a new knot for 4 or 5 days plus NO break offs with small or bigger fish.
I still learning about the braid as to the do and don't do,for the first time it tangled around the end of my rod today twice.The first time it took a alittle figuring to get it untangled,easier the second time.After I learn the do and don't on braid you want be able to run fast enough to give me a truck load of cat gut line.

Braid does not drop through a slip floater like mono does. Also any time it ever so slightly touches cypress twigs it will hang on . It will wear out guides. it is so limp that it likes to throw a loop around the tiptop. It has its place but mono will do some things better.
Crappie bite twice a day. 15 minutes before I get there and 10 minutes after I leave.

I have a good friend that takes those large gar and cuts them into 6" pieces (lengthwise) with a hatchet and then takes a felit knife and cuts out the roll of meat. It is as white a cotton and not a bone in it. He then smokes it and then cans it. You cannot believe how good that is. With a saltine cracker it will make you slap yo grannie. Seriously it is some fine eating. The canning is just for perserving it.
If the good Lord is willing and the creeks dont rise I'll catch a slab today.
