trolling for crappie
At what speed does everyone troll at when trying to catch some crappie? Do you use your trolly motor or your outboard? Also what lures. I have read a lot about this and seems like most use a bandit crank bait, I believe the 200 series. What colors do you prefer to use? What about any rubber lures like a 1.5 inch minnow? Any advance is appreciated. I have never done this but think it would be fun. Thanks

I have gone from .5 to 1mph on calm waters. Sometimes I will let the wind push me. As far as lures I mainly use jigs and minnows. Colors vary for the water clarity that Im in that day. Never used the crank baits so someone else would have to chime in.

K I am wanting to use my outboard motor. Dont want to buy a new trolly motor and then have to worry about the batteries keeping up. What is the best way to slow down my motor to troll at 1.5 or so? I have a mercury 60 hp 4 stroke. Seems like slowest i can get it to go is 2.88

From what I just saw on youtube a guy said to use "socks" to slow the speed down. Not sure what those are but worth a Google search and see what comes up

i have seen them and also seen some plate that you put on your motor that is supposed to slow you down. Drift socks may be my best bet

Up here in Michigan I use a trolling plate on my 40 hp Yamaha. Got mine at Cabela's for about $70 back about 9 years ago, worked so well I had to cut some holes in it to allow some water to flow through to push me. I've tried using drift socks but found them to be more hassles to use. Trolling plate pretty much automatic with just according to pull to actuate the spring loaded plate. Let's you worry about watching your lines and not the drift socks especially if there are stick ups or other just under surface hazards.

That is what i was thinking about getting dgood. Now question us what brand. I seen one called easy troll, happy troll and some others.

If it was me I'd go with the Easy- Troll. They have one that is totally automatic. Was just on Cabela's Website reading the reviews. I have one that if you forget to pull the release prior accelerating I bent the plate. Compare brands and reviews. Many reviews included what motor the plate was mounted on. Check it out maybe your motor is referenced.
