    Default Trolling Motor Question

I am still running a cable drive trolling motor on the boat we primarily fish out of. Being that we do alot of different techniques we have stuck with the cable drive and it really suits our purposes well except for trolling, it is aggravating at times. I am considering a couple different options in the future, and wanted other peoples thoughts as to there experiences. I am considering getting a power drive or terrova motor for tightlining and trolling and keeping the cable drive to swap out for summertime brush pile fishing and jigging docks in the spring. I haven't experienced it but I believe a terrova motor or something similar would be aggravating jigging docks/brush, so I am thinking my best option may be to switch them out once we start jigging from the months of April-October (if this is not hard, I am not a mechanic). My next question is the foot control on the terrovas workable with a foot? Most people I see are still using hands to run them at times. Just wanting some opinions based on yall's experiences and thoughts. Also if buying a remote control motor what does everybody recommend as being the best for the money? I personally prefer a Minn Kota motor.

I have not used the terrova but I have 4 trolling motors that I swap between boats. All my motors are 24 volt and I have them mounted an the minn Kota short mount so I can interchange from boat to boat. I have a minn Kota foot control if I want to fish for bream or bass (God forbid). My experience with the electric steer is they are slow to respond and will drive you crazy in a place like low falls swamp. I tried using the electric steer in Florida bream fishing one year and will never do that again. It takes about 10 minutes to swap trolling motors. I have a 24 volt auto pilot for sale

I just went from a foot control cable to the powerdrive v2 and love it, i went with the powerdrive because it has a lot of capabilities but you do not have to buy them all at once. I just have the foot pedal with the 18 foot cord and love it. I am looking to upgrade it to ipilot in the future when the funds are there. I use it for tightlining and pulling planer boards for stripers and its incredible compared to the old cable controlled one that wears your foot out.

I too use the V2 model from MinnKota. The foot pedal works well, but I prefer the hand control purchased from Marc Danque for most all my trolling motor uses. No experiences with the Terrova.

I just bought the Terrova 2 months ago and absolutely love it. The Ipilot is a great feature. I fish brush, shoot docks, tightline minnows, cast the banks and longline and I would have no other motor. The remote control gives you so much control, including the spot lock feature which is excellent on brush piles and fishing docks. You just have to learn to position the boat properly according to wind and current. I also have a V2 Powerdrive and it's OK but nothing compared to the Terrova. I'll probably sell the powerdrive now that I'm hooked on the Terrova. Also have a Riptide for saltwater and it's fairly easy to change over from season to season. As sinker stated, the mounting plates make it even easier to change over as needed.

I too have mounting plates on all my boats. I can put my v2 or my cable drive on any of my boats. It is wonderful to be able to go from motor driven to cable driven for different types of fishing.

Yes, the Terrova and Power Drive are slower turning. I've tried to solve this dilemma in several ways. The best for me was having both TMs mounted at the same time. Mount them side by side, then you can just use whichever you want at anytime. The quick release brkts work very well, too. But you'll find yourself wishing you had the other TM while fishing. Of course, if you choose the quick release brkts and if your boat is pretty good size, you can store one TM in a rod box and keep the other one on the deck.

I have a terrova and a foot control motor guide...The terrova is excellent for trolling, only way to go.The terrova SUCKS for dock fishing, bass fishing, anytime you are moving around back and forth trying to fish and move the boat in small areas....You can not watch the motors direction and fish.with the digital footpad you have no idea the direction the motor is going with out looking at it,,,,you cant half fish for watching the motor....With that said Terrova rocks for trolling, and offshore brush pile fishing,,,Foot control for all else

All Ive ever had and will ever have is a MinnKota trolling motor. Current, and for the past several years now, I have the V2 with I-pilot and couldnt ask for anything better. I longline troll 99.9% of the time but the tm works great for spider rigging as well as simply "bumping" along if fishing downlines in timber. I dont miss the foot control at all. All I need is the hand held remote and I can do about anything I want with it. Now, that said, I once before owned a Carolina Skiff and when the wind kicked up pretty strong the I-pilot gave me some problems with boat control simply because the boat sat on top of the water and bobbed up and down and blew sideways and was a complete pain in the butt to control. Now with a V-hull I couldnt ask for anything better. Everything about the I-pilot works great with the heavy V-hull I have now. Depending on your boat....if you ever tried the I-pilot (V2 or the Terrova) you might find that that is the only tm you'll need for any style of fishing you do AND with just the handheld remote. Good luck with whatever you decide.
