Default A Crappie "High" yesterday in Lakeland

Well, I was dressed for the weather, 48 degrees in the morning. Ya see, my wife and I are now weather acclimated wimps! Anything under 70 degrees, oh well you know what I'm sayin!

First thing I noticed was water temps were down to 68-69 degrees.
I started spider rigging, jigs tipped with minners, wind came up a bit, but boat control was manageable. Caught 5 in the first hour, was having a great day and just enjoying everything about it.

If I could find deep water, I usually would catch one or two. Seems that anything over .4 mph and I wouldn't get bit, the wind was gusting from time to time, so I started looking for more protected areas.

I had 8 in the boat when my friend Yelim sent me a text, he was fishing in another area nearby. Things had slowed down, and I just came into an area where there was deep water and quite a few humps. Then BINGO, it was Crappie Time! I would hit this one spot with the deepest water, and sometimes 2 on at a time. I'm an old man, but when the bite like this happens, there are NO words to explain! I can't even imagine the feelings you guys get,Name: IMG_3199.jpg

Took 10 home and released over 10 more.

    Thanks Harold,

I'm having all I can do to try to keep .5mph, especially with any breeze at all. Where I'm fishing, drift socks are NOT an option, maybe a couple 5 gallon buckets tied close. Also thinking of getting some sandbags for the bow?? My recessed front seat sits quite a ways back, therefore allowing the bow to rise up out of the water, more than I would like.

What is depth of water your working Marv ? If less than 15 you can use chain
effectively attached to 50' rope. Chain will slide quite well over rocks/submerged
    trees.

Marv, if you chose buckets get a hole saw and put a 1 in hole dead center in the bottom then about 4 around the perimeter of the bottom. Drill a small hole at bottom edge and thru the bottom. Tie a extra heavy cord to that so you can dump water and pull in backward. Makes it a lot easier. Where the handle goes in I have always drilled a hole on either side then run a piece of rope thru that leaving enough to tie a overhand loop in one section with the tag ends just tied together.

The last 2-3 weeks, been finding the fish in 18-20'+ water depth, probably no more than 150-200 yards then depths change drastically. I bought some chain last year, been a little hesitant to try it, figured I would end up loosing it.

Thanks for this cray, appreciate having a couple of options to try. How far off the boat do you run the buckets?

    Thanks,
    Marv

5-10 ft back should slow you down pretty good. Just like with socks though you have to watch pretty close if you have stickups. They can get hung up and that can be dangerous if in a strong wind. I use cheap aluminum Caribeners to attach my socks and chains hoping that if they get hung and I can't get to them they will bend or brake before I get in real trouble.
