That's awesome, who would have ever thought we would ever have the technology to put together a map like that. They are going to be sweet when completed. Great work.
It's not the GPS that isn't doing the job, it's the mapping software. The GPS you have in the boat does the same job as the one in your car (and vice-versa). That's just a GPS receiver getting a fix of your location from satelites and then displaying your location on a "map". If the mapping software you have installed (i.e., Navionics chart, basemap, etc.) doesn't have a certain area mapped (as with the Portsmouth lakes on our Lowrance or Humminbird plotters) you will only see blank, featureless land. You can still mark waypoints so you can go back to them when you want to, they will show that you are on land (since the lake most likely won't even show), but as far as showing the shoreline, depth, etc. you are out of luck, unless you can make your own map.

Yes, that is how it works. I'm glad I didn't know where to get any kind of map for either Meade or Cahoon. If I had known that, I would not have gotten into Dr. Depth. I only wish I had bought all three modules before he sold out, instead I just got the bottom contour version. He also sold a side scan and bottom hardness module (both add-ons to the basic one that I have). So far I have tried the maps I've made in both Lowrance and Humminbird units and they work great. The best benefit I get out of this stuff is seeing the lake in 3D on my desktop where I can model it and see all the nooks and crannies, channels, flats and humps.
