Encouraging her to find things she wants to do on her own, which means not having your annoying self around all the time, is a better solution. I thought just getting her a nice fillet knife would get her interested in fish cleaning

It does set up one of those Catch 22 type things. She wants to spend more time with him because he is not there much but if he spends more time there, she might find out she does not really like being around him that much.
