    Default Question for the board(crappie limit)

    First off I have no desire to keep a crappie under the 8 inch minimum that SC imposes. That's a very small fish! But say I take a friend from Georgia with me. Is our limit 40 or 50? If a 7 inch crappie is swimming around in my livewell am I in trouble? Don't know why but the limit thing crossed my mind.

    The way I understand it is this and hopefully if I am wrong someone would correct me. For each person in the boat with a SC fishing license that boat is entitled to 20 per person with license. If I take a minor and thet have no license because under 16 we have to share our 20 in boat. I believe if you have a 7 incj crappie in boat you will be subject to a fine. Under creel size. Also your friend from GA would need a temporary one or out of residence SC license to fish.

    I only keep at least 10 inches and above and sometimes bigger then 10 inches to keep because I filet my fish.

    I will start with the 7 inch crappie I would pray that it was alive and by chance the DNR officer has a heart and would let you release it with a good butt chewing if not you are going to get hefty fine !!! now for your friend from Georgia if you are in the Lakes that are part of the Savannah River Basin like Hartwell, Russell, and Clarkes Hill they could use a Georgia fishing license if on any other south Carolina lake they need to purchase a non resident license and as far as the creel limit goes if you are in South Carolina waters 8 inch size limit and 20 fish creel limit per person !!! if you fish the Georgia side of Lake Hartwell, Russell, and Clarkes Hill you creel limit is still 20 per person no matter which side of the lake you fish if you put your boat in on South Carolina side of the lake !!! if you put in on the Georgia side of the lake then Georgia's DNR laws are in effect !!!!! hope this helps !!!!

    Exactly what stormwalker says... depends on what states waters you are fishing.

    Actually, the first question is why in the world would anyone have a 7" crappie in the boat for the more than 4-6 seconds it might take to get it off the hook and back in the water?

    I think the creel limits follow your license. That is, if you have a GA license, obey GA creel limits (30). If you have a SC license, obey SC creel limit (20).

    I have a Georgia license but normally put in and take out on the SC side. As I understand it, if you take out on the SC side despite having a GA license, the limit is 20. I would expect to get a fine if I had a 7" crappie in my livewell and got checked and I should be ashamed. A 7" crappie is just too small to keep. I guess would be what to do one with one that was gut hooked and was not likely to live. I would still probably chunk it back to be safe and give the little fellow an apology.

    as I STATED IN MY PREVIOUS POST ;
    if you fish the Georgia side of Lake Hartwell, Russell, and Clarkes Hill you creel limit is still 20 per person no matter which side of the lake you fish
    if you put your boat in on South Carolina side of the lake !!! if you put in on the Georgia side of the lake then Georgia's DNR laws are in effect !!!!!

    pay attention to the blue part !!!!! that means where your truck and trailer is parked for you to trailer the boat back home !!!!!!! I have already ran this rabbit before with LAW ENFORCEMENT !!!!! when in doubt call DNR !!!!

    Joe is right. You don't want to be caught in SC waters with a Ga limit, regardless of which state's liscense you have in your pocket. To me....the shady grey area would be what happens if youre headed home and pass a check station and a game warden is there checking livewells? Will he BELIEVE you was fishing on the Ga side of the lake? My advice is CALL THE GAME WARDEN and ask him personally before you pay a dumb fine. Just my 2 cents worth...
