My PB crappie came out of Lake Murray in 2006. She weighed 2.25 lb and was just shy of 16" long. That was my freshman year at Clemson and the first year I REALLY got into crappie fishing. I had caught fish the previous springs by casting jigs, but seeing people spider rig peaked my interest so I dove in head first. It was immediate success. First trip out me and my cousin caught around 25 fish and I thought we had stumbled on the "magic method." It may have been the third trip out my dad and uncle were fishing and I was mainly running the dip net and watching them try their hand at our new approach. I'll never forget my dad saying, "The next rod that goes down is yours." (We were only setup to fish 2 folks at the time so the man in middle casted a jig and took any bites the other fellas wanted to offer) Low and behold the very next fish was the 2.25 lber. We all thought I had a striper.

7 years later and I still haven't bested that fish or even matched it. I have caught lots of 2 lb+ fish, but they all have ranged from 2 lb even to 2 lb 3 oz. My dad caught his PB to match mine 3 years ago. We hit one stretch of a creek tightlining and I caught a 2 lb 1 oz fish and then a 2 lb 2 oz back to back. Moments later my dad boated a 2 lb 4 oz fish. We had over 17 lbs in our top ten fish that morning. Good memories!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that a 2.5lb+ fish in my near future. I'll keep fishing and enjoying what I catch regardless!

Well everyone knows I caught my PB last Thursday, it was 17 1/14'' and weighed 3 pound 1-1/4 oz and was caught using a black/gold glitter body and chart tail slider using a 1/16 yellow/green jighead and the fish was caught at Secession plus two other black crappie that went over 2 pounds.
Before this crappie I had 2 white crappie that were both 2 pound 8 oz and both of those fish were caught at Clark Hill spider rigging hand-tied jigs. Last year I caught 2 crappie at Greenwood that was 2 pound 6 oz and 5 other black crappie that were over 2 pound with all fish caught on jigs and all of these were released after the pics were took. On Russell I have caught a good many crappie that was over 2 pound and I know there will be some 3 pounder's caught on that lake. Hartwell is a hard lake but 3 years ago I caught 3 black crappie that were 2-1, 2-4, 2-5 and caught on jigs longlining.

Now that you mention that about Hartwell, I can't ever remember catching but a couple fish out of Hartwell that hit the 2lb mark. My roommate caught a bigun that we never got the chance to weigh. Ridgerunner may remember that fish. He came over to weigh him for us, but his scales were dead. If I had to guess I'd say he was 2.25-2.5 lb. That fish came off of one of Ridgerunner's brush piles that he was nice enough to show me.

While I was at Clemson I fished Hartwell a lot and I caught a lot of fish when the lake was suitable. As a whole, I generally caught better sized fish on average than I did on Murray back then, but we always caught more BIG fish (over 2 lbs) out of Murray. Recently the average size fish we catch on Murray is on the up and has probably surpassed what I used to catch on Hartwell. I guess that's due to the new 8" rule?!?!?!? Murray has had an extra year for it to yeild its effects.

It's odd though from year to year what the fishing is like. 2 years ago before I started full time employment I probably caught 15-20 fish in the spring of the year that were 2 lb+. Last year I only caught 4-5 and this year I've only caught 1 fish that hit the 2 lb mark. With that being said, we have consistently caught bigger sacks of ten fish this year than any other year to my knowledge. From Christmas time till now I don't think we have dipped below 11 lbs for a ten fish sack and the majority have been 13 lb+.

That is the best story on here. Reminds me of my Grandpa's story about a five pound bluegill that he caught on a two pound cricket.

My PB was a 17 inch crappie that weighed right at 3 pounds it came out of Clarks Hill when i was in the 8th grade, it is on my wall. The wind was blowing like crazy that day and we were limited to fishing the cove at Dorn Boat Ramp because it was too windy to take the big water in the john boat. I caught this fish on a real old tree about a 100 yards from the baot ramp. I probably caught my 2nd biggest that I know I have weighed this past Sunday afternoon on a short trip to Greenwood, it weighed 2 pounds 5 ounces, and I do have a picture below. I don't have a digital copy of the 3 pounder, but did snap a pic of the big one on Sunday before she was released to hopefully catch this Saturday!

The next month should be the best chance to make it happen.....we shall see.... with a 2 day trip lined up at santee and a 3 day trip to the Hill.....Hmm...My odds are getting better and better!!!!!!!!!!

About 7-8 years ago I was nightstalking on Lake Wylie. I got set up near a brushpile that Rango and I had placed a couple of months before. I saw one of my rodtips plunge toward the water and set the hook. By the fight I thought I had a catfish on but just as it came to the surface it rolled under my light and I saw a huge silver flash that looked like the bumper on a '57 Buick. Got it netted and it was 16.5 inches and 2lb 7oz. A few minutes later the scene was repeated and I landed a 2lb 5oz'er. Those are the 2 biggest I ever caught and since I used to fish mostly with Rango they were the 2 biggest I ever saw

I put them on ice and wanted to get a pic of me holding them the next morning before cleaning them but the only person home to operate the camera was my 5 year old daughter. She cut my head out of the pic and it was out of focus.
    One taste of the bait
is worth the pain of the hook

My biggest so far was a 2lb 5oz fish caught on a black/blue/black 1/24oz Hal Fly tipped with a minnow spider rigging up the Apalachee River on Lake Oconee in Georgia. Caught several over 2lbs, have caught (2) two pounders in a day many times only minutes apart on Lake Oconee, but a fish over 2lb 8ounces plus is a fish in a class all it's own. Oconee has them, but not as plentiful as the Hill. I suspect with a little more fishing on the Hill that this will be broken. Just started fishing the Hill last year.
