That unit will serve you well but if you can afford it I would go with the larger screen. Side to side real estate is important when viewing side imaging. Not so much in down imaging.

Bama, I had the 597 and really loved it, but I traded it in and got a 958 for more real-estate.

    Redge,
so you can see fish on structure with the 1198.
I can find tons of structure on my 998c, but actually seeing fish (dots, specks) on it is not happening.
What about scanning docks and seeing fish?
    thanks for the earlier reply

QUOTE=Redge;2380847]Brettw I have a 958 up front, I run a 1198 at the console. In my home lake there is not a lot of structure. What is there, has been placed there by fishermen, and Mother Nature. I have had both units for a little over a year. If I am not catching fish, I will start using the 1198 to find some structure that has fish on it. After I see them on SI I will mark it and then go back with TM and fish it. Keep in mind just because the fish are there doesn't mean I can get them to bite! As far as settings, I have never really had to adjust much except contrast, and I do change SI colors depending on whether it is sunny or cloudy. Last but not least I have some good friends that run Lowrance, I think it is really a ford/Chevy thing as far as brand. Get you a good finder and start using it. I think it's all about time on the water! If you need more info let me know.
Best thing I can tell you is find a crappie.com member and go for a ride on there boat, and check the finders out in person on the water. Shoot if your in OK send me a pm and we will go fishing and you can see them in action.[/QUOTE]

I had a HB 898c for a couple years. Had no probs with it.

Buddy got a Low HDS8. Much better images.

I sold my HB and got an HDS 8. I like it much better.

    HB 2d is slightly better.
Radio button preset on HB to change screens is nice.
HB (non HD) is VERY hard to see in sunlight.
HB make a waypoint on every screenshot (bad)

Low side imaging is better. Can see fish to sides much better than HB.
Low Down image is much better.
Low two seperate transducers is nice (2d on TM for drop shotting and Si/Di on transom)
Low Easy to see in light
Low No sensitivety adjust on Si/Di (bad)
Low is nice to scroll back on screen history

BrettW, I can see fish on the SI, then mark them and come back with DI or shorten up the SI range.

I will try to hunt up some pics to post.

I have not mastered the shooting under docks, but haven't really tried. My home lake doesn't have many docks on it.
