Oh my that is some good looking fruit. I've enjoyed the ones I purchased from the grocery store. Can't wait to one day grow my own. How tall is the fence you put up? I have planned to do this around various trees after grafting.

It's 5ft wire. I will take it down when the harvesting is done. A door using a curved length of wire is there, I overlapped it 2 ft past the opening. No closer needed. If you pick a Fuyu Persimmon while the bottom still has any green tint to it ripening is a problem. I have found they must get orange on the bottom too before reliable ripening occurs.

I had to post this, I bought a Kinetic Pecan Cracker to shell our harvest. It is set up in the shop, clamped to the welding table to keep it in place. I didn't like the rubber bands that came with it so I used the rubber bands I buy for Topworking trees. Works great. You load a pecan, slide the shield over it once in place, hold the anvil against the pecan forcing the aluminum energy transfer plunger against the hardwood Hammer. You just pull back the Hammer and let go. Crack!



I just crack what I will shell at a sitting. With this tool I'm getting about 70-75% Halves. Just fantastic.



You can see it explodes the hull right off the pecan kernels. I am using a nut cracker & pick for the tedious stuff but this is way easier picking than the old lever type nut cracker. It is made in Dothan, Al.

Yeah it makes a huge difference having a cracker. I used to run the automatic one my grandfather had. When my grandfather died he left it to me. I use it every year still. Couple of years ago I noticed they have a foot pedal now for it. I will be purchasing it sometime. No need this year since it wasn’t a good harvest for us.

I will buy one of those next year, my cracker came from 855Sheller.com. With all the issues & outlays this year I passed on buying one. The foot pedal will be in the purchase when I order.

As always having the right tool makes it much easier to complete the task.

They make a difference for sure. My grandfather used to spend all day, everyday working on shelling them during pecan season. He would sell bags of them shelled. People like the half shelled pecans the best. One lady would buy over 100 bags every year. Lots of memories I have with him doing pecans and running that cracker.

Just a quick post as this morning I processed all the ripe persimmons in the fridge. I cut off the tops on a slight angle kinda like cutting the top off of a bell pepper, use a tablespoon to scoop everything out then scrape down the skins. All goes into a bowl so if any seeds are present I can remove them before pureeing all the pulp & juices together. Ended up with a good gallon of persimmon puree when done.

Do you try to propagate your seeds? I saved some American persimmon seeds and I’m going to try propagating them. I figured I can always use them as rootstock if nothing else.

Fuyu persimmons have very few seeds. I would air layer to propagate for a head start. I've bought rootstock seeds from Schfield Seeds but didn't care for the trouble with growing the rootstock one year maybe two before grafting.
