You can Topwork any wild American Persimmon over to any variety you want. If you have a wild tree 1in or bigger in diameter I can send you scion wood to use to graft it to the Fuyu variety. You just want to leave the lowest limb to keep the host alive while the new scion heals. The nurse branch can be removed or trimmed back as the new wood buds grow.

Big, sweet, Japanese Fuyu Persimmons are ripening now. I cut a few off the tree this morning that are finishing up getting soft.



You can graft this variety of persimmon to any wild persimmon you have growing around your house.

I topworked these trees 7 or so years ago. I use a tall painters ladder to pull the pecans while still in the tree opening up. This allows me to get my harvest before the squirrels & crows wipe me out. I use a scarecrow on a ladder to discourage the crows for entering the yard.



You don't pick the pecans till the green shuck is splitting open.



Once I pull a bucket full I sit on the back porch and pop the pecans out. This goes faster than you can pick them up almost.



I just work a hour or two in the mornings but the effort adds up.



Last year was almost one full 5 gallon bucket this year looks to be three full 5 gallon buckets. Last year was the first year the topworked pecan tree bared.

I bought 6 Fuyu persimmons the other day and gave two to my mom and have eaten one the last 3 days. I’ll buy more tomorrow if they have them. They sure are good. Our pecans trees are so large we just gather them when they fall on the ground. Never thought about gathering them while still in the tree. We’ve managed about 2 buckets this year and I think that’s gonna be it. The crows destroyed us this year. Luckily we have some still in freezer from last year. Good idea about the scarecrow on the ladder.

Well I had a surprise when I went to start cracking our harvest. Numerous pecans were damp, didn't know how many so I dumped all 4 buckets of pecans on the driveway and let the sun dry them out. After drying in the sun I put them all in Champagne Baskets so air will get all around them. I found 2 pecans that had actually germinated. Well I had to plant those in the yard.

I wish I had the big bushel baskets my grandfather had. They were old and looking bad but were perfect for keeping harvest in and allowing airflow. I think when they were cleaning everything out they trashed them. I’m going to see if I can find some of those baskets. Thanks for sharing.

If you can't find any check the coast in your area as commercial fisherman use them extensively.

I found some like that online but minimum order is one pallet
Found another kind that’s $20 each. I might just take a drill bit to some 5 gallon buckets….lol.
I’ll keep looking.

I had to fence around my Fuyu Persimmon tree to reduce critter damage. So far it is working well along with my trapping efforts. The Yellow Jackets are feeding on the damaged ripe fruit so I know those Persimmons down so I don't get stung.



I don't know how many I have already harvested, used, & shared - maybe half the tailgate shown but this is what I have ripening for processing now.
