I live close To Taylorsville but have never had much luck there. I like to spider rig drift or troll and I dont think that Taylorsville is a good lake for that type of fishing.
you are correct in your assumption that Taylorsville is not a "prime" lake for spider rigging. I've fished it since it opened, and can tell you that the Crappie are "Very" wood oriented there. But, by the same token, you could use one of your long poles to vertical jig the timber - and probably catch some decent fish. I mainly cast jigs to the wood, so the spider rigging method is way down the list of my methods used. Besides - dragging jigs around, in open water at Taylorsville, is going to get you more Hybrid Striper/White Bass hits ... than Crappie !! :D
Have you fished Green River Lake much this year ? I used to fish there quite often ... and caught some real nice Slabs from there. It's one of the few lakes I've fished, where trolling has paid off almost as well as casting. GRL is pretty cyclic in its size & number production ... several years of small fish, then a year of Slabs, then back to small fish. If this is the "year of the slabs" - please give me a hollar ... luck2ya ....cp

I would think that the water is up and there is a lot of trash in the lake after all the rain. I am hoping to make a trip to Ky. Lake this weekend if all goes well with work this week.
Anytime you want to know what the current water "levels" are at these two lakes (and others) - look here:
http://www.lrl.usace.army.mil/wc/reports/lkreport.html
You will also find - Barren, Rough, Nolin, Cave Run, and other watersheds. Click on the name of the lake/river (under the heading - Project) for a web page about those waters. Click on the "Today's Pool" number, of that body of water, and it will show you a chart - showing the last 15 months of the rise and fall of the water levels of that body of water.
Good info to help you determine what the current conditions of the lakes are ... as it pertains to water levels. .............cp
I fish for crappie and bass mainly on Cave Run.
I mainly fish the river at Cave Run also, usually putting in at Poppin' Rock. Since the water has been up for so long I'm way ahead on jobs around the house and might try to get on the water some day this week too. I think the warter is still pretty high but they say most of the ramps will be open today with the exception of Clay Lick. Good luck. :)Quote:

I know Poppin' Rock is open but as of this morning (June 30) Bangor was not available. Since they're dropping the lake about 8 inches a day and Bangor should be open by this weekend. Think I'll wait until after the 4th weekend to hit the river. If you go, good luck and I know what you mean about that prop killing thing! Friend of mine lost 2 of 3 blades in that area one day! Fortunately we had a good full charge on the trolling motor battery to get home on! :)Quote:

I have been real successful with a hot pink tube with silver speckles on a black 1/32 oz. jig head on the north fork area around Poppin' Rock. Think I got 'em from Bass Pro Shop. Of course the old stand by chart. works well too. The tubes with silver or gold sparkles seem to work well regardless of color. I've wanted to try to use more artificial for crappie but just seem to gravitate back to minnows when the bite gets slow. Now that the 4th madness is over I need to try to get on the water soon. Five day forecast looks like Thursday would be a good day. Good luck, and maybe I'll see you on the water someday.
mostly at home lol

I haven't been to Barkley in many, many years ... but, when I did go there - it was usually thru the last week in April. By that time the Crappie were usually already in the buckbrush and shallow stump beds in the coves and creeks. I would tent camp at the COE campgrounds next to the Canal ... just up the road from Grand Rivers, Ky. I'm sure there are many more places to eat and bed down now ... than there were then. I fished the coves and pockets from Barkley Dam to the prison ... but, only those that had buckbrush or stumps. A large minnow under a float, about 18 inches deep, dropped in and around stumps ... brush piles ... or into the openings of the buckbushes, would usually produce the larger fish. And, yes ... 2lb fish were quite common.
I don't know if that much has changed at Barkley, over the years, but you can always post your question on the main board ... someone who fishes there now, will surely answer. Also check thru your search engine of choice, and find some sites with updated fishing reports. ....luck2ya ......cp

I see by your lake listings, that you fish Watts Bar. Take a look at the Main Message board, and check out the "Spring Fling" post (top of the forum). It may be something you'd like to get involved in. Don't hesitate to ask me anything about the tournaments ... take care and keep in touch ...cp

I would love to join in on the Spring Fling. I have never fished in a crappie tourney before. Sounds like alot of fun but I have had a trip to Lake Guntersville AL planned for that weekend. Fishin' for trash fish(Bass) with some of bass fishin' buddies.
I'm also a member of BassBoatCentral. There's alot of good boat information there as well.
Keep up the good work.
Jeff
I fish Ky & Barkley
Great site!
We fish taylorsville, nolin, green, and sometimes cumberland (usually for stripers though). Fished barren a few times but I'll be moving to bowling green soon and fishing barren a lot more. I'll try to keep ya'll posted on how fishing is going for me. We just came back from a terrible trip to cumberland saturday, too much wind and too little knowledge of the lake.

Like fishing the lakes around Lake Alfred and Winterhaven, Fla
Best lake I've ever had results on was the "Big O" where the Kissimmee River enters the lake back in 1990.
Starting to fish Rough River more these days as we tore them up in mid Nov last year (05).
Usually cast curley tails, but like to slow troll or drift when conditions allow. Use both live bait and jigs and will troll Bandits when fish are scattered.
I agree on the Cedar Creek comment. That place is gonna be a powerhouse for crappie, maybe even this season. I fished there several times last year and ALWAYS caught a few keepers. The first time I went there, me and 3 of my uncles caught about 35 crappie in an hour, on rigged minnows and white curly grubs on white jigheads. That was just around the main dock! I've never really been any farther than the first channel on the right from the main dock, which would mean my total exploration of the lake would be about 5%. We only brought home 11 keepers that day, but I probably caught about 10 less than a half inch shy of the keeper limit. All the fish and wildlife reports say Cedar Creek is to be a trophy bass lake, but I've not had much luck with bassin' on the lake. I hope the crappie continues to improve there, because I've had a great time everytime I've went.
Steve from Middlesboro, KY
Fish Cannon Creek Lake in Pineville, KY
Mainly catching rinbow trout, looking to start crappie fishing. Need some tips.
Art from Stanford.
Fish Green River, Cumberland, Dale Hollow, Herrrington and Cedar Creek. Just got back from a trip to Green yesterday. We caught 15 keepers with most of the 25 - 30 fish caught in the 7-8 inch size. Largest was a slab 15 in. and several in the 10-12 in size. Newly retired so I intend to hit the water as much as possible now!:)
jeepum: ANY question you could EVER think about crappie fishing, someone in this massive member base will surely be able to help you out. For a general crappie question, the main forum might be more productive than the KY board, since such a larger amount of people patrol. However, for specific questions about KY lakes, you're looking at the best advice you can get for those! :)
I've not fished all of the lakes in the state, and I'm still relatively new to crappie fishing, myself, but I've caught a few. Still learning more everyday, and hopefully I can catch one of those 20 inchers this year! :D
Newlight2: Congrats on the catch! Quite a productive day for the time of year. Uh oh... better watch out for those retired guys. :D
If I go fishing, it's either crappie or brim, but my alltime favorite is Reelfoot. Rough river has been good to me, and I like Taylorsville, but when the weather gets nice, the yahoo's tend to take over, so I try to fish where it's not jet ski friendly.
aka Cedar Creek?
I fish Barren, Malone and Barkley and occasionally Green. We have a small State owned lake that is close to the Warren/Butler county line called Shanty Hollow. It will suprise you at times with what you can catch out of there. It has huge shell crackers and some good crappie too.
Hello all, I am Jeff from Wildie and fish Lake Linville, Cedar Creek (My fav) and Lake Cumberland. New guy here needs all the help I can get.
wldkat here from Vine Grove... I fish Rough River the most. Had my best year the spring of 2003. I usually fish out of North Fork. I also like Reel Foot and Weiss Lake. My 7 year old son and my wife and I are headed to Weiss Sat the 25th for a week of crappie fishing and can't wait...
