Redear are what I usually fish for and I like to straight line em on bottom with an open face reel. I use the smallest split shot I can, putting it about 14-18 inches above my number eight hook. I fish with baby nightcrawlers, redworms and behmoth, I don't like crickets for redear. I also will use a bobber, put the bait on the bottom and let the bobber just barely fall over. A redear will usually nibble and stand the bobber up instead of taking it under. They bite much softer than a bluegill under normal circumstances, (especially in deep water).

One thing I've noticed about redear though, is that they tend to really turn on about an hour before the sun goes down. My best catches have happened during this time, we've caught very little during the day time but in the evening they will start biting like crazy.
