    Wademaster, I have just used the billy bluegill spider this past year, but the colors that I liked best were black or olive with black or white rubber legs. I also am making poppers this winter out of flip flops. I used a hot needle to thread a string then the rubber legs through them on some and some I just tied the rubber on the outside like you would a foam spider on others. The great thing about tying your own is that you can experiment without very much capital involved.

    Here is another one on a fly this morning. Beadhead caddis nymph, size #12



    Not a bluegill but still pulled on the string, note the fly on my index finger nail.

    You "could" do either. But, if you want to use it on anything other than a flyrod ... leave the sinker on the line (for wet flies). Dry flies & poppers can be cast & fished using a float ... especially good are the "torpedo" style casting bubbles.
