    I agree with Bob/MN (+/-)

Fish don't have brains that reason ... they just act on instinct & habit. As long as the conditions dictate that there's no "danger" in the immediate area, fish don't recognize fishing line as a threat ... even if it's highly visible to them. I'd concentrate more on making my approach & presentation more "stealthy", and worry less about line color (unless needed for you to see the bite).

And, consider this ... if you've been using the 20/6 green braid, live bait fishing, and catching fish --- why would that make a difference when switching to artificials ?? My experience has been that fish are usually more interested in what's on the end of your line, than what color the line is !!

I've caught those same species of fish, that you mentioned, on lines that were - black, multi-colored, clear, fluorescent, (several shades of) green, and also red, yellow, gold, chartreuse, grey, and even a light "bronze" (photochromic) ... in lightly stained to murky waters. I don't use a leader, unless the rigging requires it, as it simply adds another potential problem area or failure point (the knot).

I must have smart bream in one of the lakes i fish cause its got clear water and a bright cork will spook em ,so i use old real corks if im not tight lining and smaller diameter line often out fish's large diameter line.

Breram fishing , I spool the entire reel with #4 line. I use a slip float or waggler float and split shot. I tie on a small barrel swivel to prevent line twist then use a #10 circle hook and wax worms. You will catch all the bream you care to eat. Another option would be to tie on a 1/64 jig and tip with a waxie. This is a nice thread link http://www.crappie.com/crappie/main-...beginners.html that shows beginners what other jig /rig options people are using.

<IMHO> I don't It really makes a big difference to the fish. I believe we think the fish are smarter than they really are; after all their brain is about the size of a pea.
My father and I were set up this way - me with 4lb gold Stren and him with 4lb clear. We usually caught about the same, but there was one afternoon when he was catching bream steadily while I was striking out. He gave me 4ft of his line and I made a leader and started catching fish. Never went back to gold after that.

I think it rarely matters, but does under certain circumstances.

For many a years i fished constantly at night for white perch.I would use every rod and reel i had often ,,and the reels set up for bass had larger line than my panfish rigs.I noticed especially on the slow nites the ones with smaller diameter line would catch "more" or do all the catching....There is alot to be said for stealth.

Chris O'Neill, PENN Field Tester & Owner of Tail Chaser Charter Services sent this photo to Penn of his impressive arsenal of Spinfisher Vs reels...U will notice that the ratio of clear line vs Colored is 5 to 1 favoring the clear line.Name: AAAAAAAAAAAAPENREELS.jpg

Thanks for all the responses, everyone. What I'm gonna do is borrow a rod from my Dad (I only have one so far) and try both methods. One rod with a leader and the other without.

It depends. On one outing in very clear water, 2 vs. 4 lb. test clear mono made all the difference, and I had one occasion when gills were all over lures on clear 4 lb. mono but wouldn't touch the same lures on 2 lb. gold Stren. I've also had a few bluegills hit pike spoons on wire leaders.

I've seen fishing slow and a clear line seemed to help IMO.

Pappy, remember when we were kids and you could by line in black or white and once in a great while you might find some in green and it all looked like well rope. We still caught fish. I guess them old time
fish were dumber than these modern fish. still remember when my uncle gave me some of the new cat gut line. Didn't think that stuff would ever take off.
