Weight below the hook-----I'm thinking the weight below the hook lets the weight pull my hook free since hopefully it's on the same side of the limb I just pulled it up against, provided of course I didn't just "set the hook on a big one, opps, that was a limp". Also with the minnow on a short leash of only about an inch or two he can't swim around a limb hopefully. I tried using the drop shot rig like the bass fisherman use on a shaky head but felt like the minnow couldn't move around enough. I have fished it both ways and this is just my gut feeling.
Late last summer and early fall I used about 2 to 3 feet of line below the hook and caught more fish up off of the bottom than I did on the bottom. Since I make my rigs up ahead of time now I just reel up one turn or so to get off of the bottom.
This past Monday I seemed to have to bang the weight around in the brush to trigger a bite.
