George, I use my elctronics. I just wished the shad would tell me which direction they were moving!!! LOL!!!

Started out with a heavy frost on the boat and seats this morning. Trying to find the depth for the moment when my Mother called and said her Yorkie was missing. Back to the ramp, drop boat off out house, drive to Broken Arrow. I got there and found evidence that her dog was taken as a meal and the blood trail ended about 100 yards down the street. Most likely a coyote I figure. Am gonna miss that dog.
Went home and back to the water. I've been looking for where some of the bigger fish have been hiding on Oologah and after reading Dougs post and speaking with him, I put on my tiny shoes and started lookin for those shad balls. I found them and drug duel rods with double baits at different depths. I caught some fish 13-20' but nothing worth keeping. Then I remembered a deeper water tree I saw and marked a couple of days ago and made a beeline for that. With tiny shoes put up, I grabbed the 10' Huckabee Dipping Rod and started working around the tree. From 13'-18' I started pulling 11,12 and 13" fish out. I was still working it when I had to leave to take my youngest to Church. Kept 20.
Guys, I can't believe the difference I'm feeling when using the Huckabee. I could feel the shad bumping the line, the weight of my jig (1/8oz) getting lighter when I got an upward hit, BAM! Set the hook! Those of you who haven't tried them are missing out! The sensitivity is the best I've seen in a longer rod. IKenI, Allen thanks you very much!
Gonna try it again tomorrow with Starfish so I can brag on his product and prove what I say about it. I hope the rain holds off cause the only thing I want to get wet is another Crappie Reaper jig.

Ken Roberson, Huckabee Rod man, Starfish on the board called me a couple of days ago to extend an invitation to go out on Oologah with him today. I accepted his invitation with giddy excitement as it's rare that I get to fish out of something nicer than the USS-POS. He sent me a text early letting me know that his time frame was changing a bit and that he should arrive around 10:30-11. When he pulled into the drive, I drooled with envy as I gazed upon his beautiful Sprint Dual Console Bass boat. We say our pleasantries, we go ahead and prep the boat for the afternoons hunt.
Kens boat sports the latest in Lowrance Electronics, (Just ask that Chatt Martin guy about how I feel about this. I swear I need to keep some adult diapers handy at times!) As I'm clearing the drool from my beard, I ask Ken to fire up the Big Screen on the console. Then I tell him we're not going too far for the first spot so put it on Side/Down screen. We made a couple of circles in a certain area and then she pops up on the Sidescan screen at 50' over. We run over it with the Downscan and toss out the traditional marker bouy. With the Lowrance shouting FISH FISH FISH, we grabbed our trusty Huckabee Rods and doth drop hell from above on some 11" Crappie. Ken is actually testing a prototype rod he just got in from his engineers using a Beaver Tail. I'm using my Huckabee Dipping Rod with a home spun 1/8th oz jig. I'm guess that first strike hit Kens fare within 20 seconds of him dropping that Beaver Tail bomb on their heads. It was an 11" Crappie somewhat bigger than average for Oologahs present slump in quality fish. These fish have all been fat and chunky though which is a good thing.
For some reason, Ken had me run the trolling motor. That makes the second time in less than a week I was fishing with someone else on their boat and got to play part time Captain. The first was Papa at last Saturdays Tourney on Kaw. It was an honor from both of them, but I wonder if they realized that running a trolling motor in the wind, puts everyone else downwind. This could be a might dangerous depending on what I had for supper the previous night. I think it could be that it allows them to fish more without having to multi task and you could say I fell for running the TM hook, line and sinker. As we're fishing, some yahoo that was scanning the bank turned and started heading straight for us! I told Ken, can you believe that? He's seen us catch fish and he's headed right at us! Turns out that yahoo was Doug Owens, our own Deerhunter Odie coming out to say hello (and mark my spot) LOL! As always, I love seeing Doug on the water as he is truly a stand up guy or at least has me fooled into believing it.
Ken's a very busy man as his phone rang on a regular basis. Let me tell you, it was like an omen that he was fixing to catch another fish every time he answered a call. I lost count of the times he was on the phone while bringing in another decent fish. Once I caught a fish, handed it to him for the livewell while he was on the phone AND trying to land one for himself. Then I got a call from MinnoMan off the board. He wanted to know if I was fishing....yes...are you at Talala Creek....yes....Need some company...Am fishing with a friend on his boat, let me ask.....Ken responds....yes....Dick shows up at ramp 1.5 later. Ken and I had pretty much played out the hole we started on so once Dick arrived, we went over near a tree I dropped a couple of months back. A couple of dinks later, we were headed out towards deeper waters and felt the forcasted 5-15mph wind head on and dissed the weather reports for never being able to properly guesstimate a 5-15 mph to actually mean, big white caps, use caution while boating.
I showed Ken and Dick another area that has been nice to me in the past. We crossed a lot of shad and a little wood. We were hiding around the corner from the brunt of the wind, and playing Trolling Motor Captain had just got a bit tougher. All three of us were catching fish from 14' down to 20' in 20fow. We played our game in that spot until yours truly decided it was time to move because I was getting too cold. The bite had slowed but not stopped and I broke one of Chatt Martins main rules to never leave an area where you're catching fish! I couldn't help it, I can be a weeny at times because of my hands and fingers.
So we leave and see Doug near the mouth of a cove directly in the wind. I don't know if Dick or Ken did it, but someone tossed a bouy out and we just had to fish this spot. I'm like, ok. I stay on the TM, rod on the deck and hands in my pockets. Not a bump, let's go. We get out of the wind and it's like instant warmth. We all know the feeling after being cold. We hit another spot and boated a few more keepers then went back to the first spot that Ken and I started out at and finished the evening there. We were pretty picky on what went into the livewell, a few got in that were just shy of 10" but ended with 32 fish and probably threw back that many.
Dick took the live fish, Ken got some frozen filets from my recent day of limiting out. All in all, Oologah is down, but not out. Fishing with two great guys, wonderful! Those two guys putting up with me, PRICELESS!
Thanks for coming out Ken! Please call me when you're headed towards Gaines Creek! I need all the experience I can use.

Craig I really enjoyed spending the day in Oologah with you. Also glad Dick joined us. We'll enjoy the crappie fry very soon. Heading to the Grizzly Jig show for a weekend of turbo crappie seminars. Can't wait to get back to Oklahoma crappie. Thanks for sharing your secret spots Craig.
