They grow at an alarming rate. Those fish you are seeing were last years hatch. My guess if you fished under them with a 5/16 oz lead head and a 3" sassy shad in pearl color you would catch the bigger 1's. Its been my experience that the bigger fish will swim under the bigger schools of surfacing Sandies and eat like crazy the shad that have been cut by the surfacing fish that are floating to the bottom. Throw out the sassy shad and let it fall all the way to the bottom. When your line goes slack pick it up and rip it fast for about 10 to 15 cranks of the reel handle. You will get the hit when it is raised off the bottom or when it falls back so be ready. Do that until you have retieved you bait to the boat and try it again..Good Luck....Ranger

I tried throwing an Alabama rig with 5 3" shad in pearl white. Didn't sink it to the bottom though. I just swam it through the schools. Never got a bite on it. Thought maybe what they were feeding on was just way smaller so it was ignored. I only weighted one of the shad as well. I will try it again though. I also picked up some of the smaller rigs with 3 wires instead of 5. It's sold as a crappie rig at Walmart. Didn't give it a try though. I thought it might be a good choice for my little girl to cast as it won't weigh 15lbs and take a 30' rod to cast like the original one. Lol.

On Grand it works the way your talking about Mark. If you can get a spoon through the school and to the bottom, that is always where the big fish are. Problem is getting it down there.

Exactly...you can just let it fall..most of the time the little 1's will hit it but they let go. As far as that umbrella of sassy shads throwing that is a work out and kinda like throwing a 14' rod and 5oz weight jerkin for spoonbills..a real work out.......Ranger

Ranger have you heard or do you have a guess, how fast the crappie grow? Any idea how old a 10" fish is?
-
A 4" crappie is 1 yr old, 2 yr old is 6" to 7", 3 yr old is 9" to 10". Now you have to take into account that southern crappie grow faster than northern crappie and food supply plays a hugh factor in it as well. Hope this helps Redge......Ranger
