We were broke down and working on the corn header on the farm path. I saw him come out of the standing corn and start rooting around in the last picked rows. He was scrounging for corn lost at the corn header. He was wild and had me scared to even walk out in the standing corn to check ears. He would be sitting there looking normal and just milling around slowly and then just break and run down the field shaking its head like a madman in a zig zag pattern. He would then stop, go back to eating, and then break down the field again. I told Dad I was not going out in the standing corn again unless I had something with some serious lead propelling abilities. Dad called it, put his name on it. Said he never shot a wild hog before and was making plans for a good ole fashion hog Mullen. We saw the hog for 2 weeks and then he disappeared. About the time we were caught up and dad could go kill his beasty. We never saw it again. Hope we don't start getting those around here like they are in Bertie. I know of one farmer over there where they showed up thick and quick on him and after one year of dealing with them, he decided to retire a year or two early. They ran him out. They are bad in Bertie. I'm sure I'll have to deal with them shortly. Believe me. I will! CF
Back in the early 80's I was fishing in the sand ponds off Hwy 17, between Windsor and Williamston. I moved to one of the ponds way back in and while I was fishing, I heard some awful racket; it was a bunch of wild hogs. They came my way and a really big boar moved toward me snorting and throwing his head back and forth. He had tusks like knife blades. I had to take to the water and work my way around the pond and then made a run for the truck, which was a good distance away. Had to go home and change my drawers. Since then I have always carried my pistol when I go there, but have never seen them hogs again. I get the chills just thinking about that encounter. B-
