    Default Hey Farmer

Not sure how far this is from you, but it looks like Bambi is the least of your worries!

Bertie is the next county over from me. The only think deprecating me from those porkers is the Chowan river. They have been in Bertie and Washington counties for years now. Water seems to hold them from migrating here but it is just a matter of time. We did have a loner show up in our corn 3 or 4 years ago. He was about a 400 pounder. We were broke down and working on the corn header on the farm path. I saw him come out of the standing corn and start rooting around in the last picked rows. He was scrounging for corn lost at the corn header. He was wild and had me scared to even walk out in the standing corn to check ears. He would be sitting there looking normal and just milling around slowly and then just break and run down the field shaking its head like a madman in a zig zag pattern. He would then stop, go back to eating, and then break down the field again. I told Dad I was not going out in the standing corn again unless I had something with some serious lead propelling abilities. Dad called it, put his name on it. Said he never shot a wild hog before and was making plans for a good ole fashion hog Mullen. We saw the hog for 2 weeks and then he disappeared. About the time we were caught up and dad could go kill his beasty. We never saw it again. Hope we don't start getting those around here like they are in Bertie. I know of one farmer over there where they showed up thick and quick on him and after one year of dealing with them, he decided to retire a year or two early. They ran him out. They are bad in Bertie. I'm sure I'll have to deal with them shortly. Believe me. I will! CF

Back in the early 80's I was fishing in the sand ponds off Hwy 17, between Windsor and Williamston. I moved to one of the ponds way back in and while I was fishing, I heard some awful racket; it was a bunch of wild hogs. They came my way and a really big boar moved toward me snorting and throwing his head back and forth. He had tusks like knife blades. I had to take to the water and work my way around the pond and then made a run for the truck, which was a good distance away. Had to go home and change my drawers. Since then I have always carried my pistol when I go there, but have never seen them hogs again. I get the chills just thinking about that encounter. B-

Funny you mentioned ponds Bruce. My Brother-in-law and I got chased off of a pond in Pea Ridge by a 500 pound Black bear about 10 years ago. We had caught a bunch of bream. We had them in a 5 gallon bucket. Needless to say, the bear got to eat fish for supper. I'd hate to know I would have to carry a side arm every time I went i n the woods for anything. If they show up over hear. I will do all I can to remedy the recent pork shortage due to that swine virus that is killing the piglets. I will see if I can single handedly fill the supply gap.CF

Now there are folks saying that the pic ain't real, that he didn't shoot it, some fussing that he should not have shot such a large specimen that he would be as tuff as leather. I can't believe this crap. #1) the Dude shot the thing. 2) Yes it is real, they do get big and anyone hog hunting that would not shoot it would be an idiot. it is a trophy and that is one of the main goals of hunting.3) why would You shoot something like that???? Thats pretty simple. Because something like that needs to be shot!......... Ohhhh, lets let it live cause it has gotten so big. It deserves to live, it has earned the right. All animals that reach a certain size should be allowed to live and be free and do what it wants. That is so terrible that it had to be shot. These hunters should be ashamed of them selves for taking that animal..........

OK!!! these PETAites are driving me nuts. It is OK to shoot a 400 pounder but not a 500 pounder? Simple fact is that any animal that gets to trophy size is usually so old that their meat is tough as shoe leather. That wasn't the point in shooting it to start with. It was shot because whoever did the shooting outsmarted a very smart animal that got that size by not being stupid. As a farmer, an animal that size makes You mad because he has probably done a lot of damage to Your crops if it was taken on Your land. These hogs are mostly a menace to rural society. Also How would You gentle peace loving animal rights activist like to be taking one of Your peaceful easy feeling walks through the woods and walk up on a 500 pound wild boar? what do You think he would do? run away from You? Maybe take You hoof and hand and walk through the woods and give You a tour? NOOO!!! He would do his best to kill You and probably would. Come on folks! Get Your heads out of the fairy tale land where the chocolate bridge crosses the rainbow river.CF

Tell'em like it is brother; I'd like to see a "tree huger" hug that little Piggy when he was alive. They wouldn't think he was so cute if he happened to slice up one of their kids with his little toothy.

A Piggy wiggly like that one is as dangerous as a psycho with am AR-15 at Times Square.
