    I don't use the side flaps or the tie downs.....I have a small chain mounted near the bottom of the pole that I snap to a small ring on the floor by my mount for a safety to keep wind from takeing off with it.

    You can also use a seat pedestal to place the end of the umbrella in it and it will give you some more clearance overhead.

    My boat has a seat pedestal right behind the front seat . made a pvc that slides over the pedestal and it willi pivot a good bit . You can kill it around out of your way some and I just use it on the front . I really have just a beach umbrella . it is not quit that big .
