Lot of it has to do with light penetration, location of their main food source, water temp and oxygen level, you know black crappie like shallow water more than whites do.Could be a number of things. All that rain has washed in a lot of extra food source. If the fish find a comfort zone they can move laterally from deep to shallow but remain at the same depth in both places.Just some of what I've learned over the years!!Moon phases have a lot to do with fish and game activity!

Thump, that's a common misconception people have about the grey substance sometimes seen on a crappie's belly, it is actually shad poop, they must have been gorgeing themselves. I've seen it lots of times but mostly in the winter during a shad kill.

Crappie and all other fish by the way, have only three reasons to be where they are at any particular time: procreation (that's making little crappies for those of you who didn't graduate from Nanih Waiya), comfort, and a food source.

Next time you catch one with "mud" on their bellies, give it a sniff...smells just like sardines!
