I'm not going to get in a peeing match over this but I will say that's the same attitude employers everwhere have... Again thank god for unions... And by the way my grandfather started a union electric shop ran it for 45 years untill my dad took over and he ran it for 25 more. Union the whole time... And as a employee after 28 years I have over 250k in retirement and my insurance is the very best!...

When I bid a job with the COE or another company I do work for from time to time the price is double simply because of the hoops we have to jump through.
With that said, we dont CUT any corners as far as someones safety but in the same token we dont make the secretary wear a hard hat either. I dont doubt that when the unions were formed and came to be that folks were being asked to do things that werent safe but I dont ask anyone to do anything that I wont do and most days I do more physical work than anyone else there.

I worked in a closed shop for 36 years. We are union, 14 of them at one time. OSHA and MSHA reps. came into the shop. Police were called and they left. We have our own safety rules. The last book I looked at was close to 1300 pages. Every job spelled out for safety.
Small business is a bit different. Do what you got to do or don't eat. Lawn service for example. When was the last time you saw a member of that team walk the property before starting up mowers and things? I've found metal coat hangers in my yards while walking them before cutting. I will shut a mower down when a car passes. I won't cut while someone is close. How often do you see that?
I'm for unions and the safety they have brought us. But someone has to go beyond that sometimes in their jobs.
That's right! I agree with you on that... And I'll also say that I do understand where your comming from. It would be hard for you to compete if you had to pay all your employee's benefits and some one else didn't... That's why you don't see union contractors doing small jobs.... Too many shady contractors using unskilled labor and illegal aliens.....

This opens up a whole nuther can of worms. The so called "illegal aliens" are over here doin werk that our sorry a$$ citizens won't do because they get so much free $#*+ handed out to em that they don't hafta werk. The only reason they are here is to work. Why don't the unions go out and recruit some of our unskilled labor force and put em in one of their apprenticeship programs and get their arses off Wellfare so I don't hafta pay fer em to sit at home and draw a nice big fat check fer the 7 kids they got. Pffffft.
