    Default Terrova Question...

I'll try to make a long story shorter. I've been pulling crankbaits for twenty years, alway with the outboard. But after reading on this board about the Terrova, I just had to have one on this new boat. So I brought the boat home with a Terrova iPilot 80#, 24V, 45" shaft. Then I came home and read the rest of the article, and learned it was supposed to be 101#, 36V, 60" shaft. Fortunately for me, my dealer liked my boat so much he order him one like it for his personal use. And on my recommendation, her order him a Terrova iPilot 101#, 36V, 60" shaft. Once he saw how long the shaft was he wasn't happy. I wasn't satisfied. So we swapped.
In a previous life I was an electrician but don't have much experience with DC voltage.
Now to the questions. Minn Kota literature calls for #6 wire and a 50 amp fuse. Yet they send #8 wire for the jumpers to make 36V, and provide #8 wire leads on the motor itself. My boat is wired with #8 for the trolling motor circuit and has #8 wire pigtail to the trolling motor receptacle. It has a 30 amp fuse holder holding a 40 amp fuse; which I am changing out to a 40 amp breaker tomorrow. I know this is safe and at worst will pop the breaker.
    Now really to the questions:
How do you have yours wired?
    Wire size?
    Receptacle?
    Fuse/Breaker size?
    Any problems?
If I do decide to pull #6 wire, I can use the existing #8 for a future electric anchor.
What size circuit do you need for an anchor? Never had one.

I've got #6 hard wires to the motor with 50 amp breaker. The #8 wire on the motor is a factory flaw IMHO but they can get away with it since its a short run into the motor and will not perceptibly drop any voltage.

I'm no help on the anchor but I'm sure #8 is fine and I'm guessing a 30 amp but u need to check with install instructions on it.

One last thought. U can probably get away with the proper breaker and #6 wore with a 101 but u will be losing voltage and will decrease your run time even if you don't pop the breaker. If it were me, I'd pull the #6 and do it right

That's what I am thinking. But it is discouraging when you try to find the parts you need. I still haven't found a 50 amp receptacle and plug. And not real sure about a 50 breaker, all I have found are only rated 24 volts. Pulling new wire wouldn't be that big a deal, but worthless without the right connections on each end.

GrizzlyJig or even BPS has the breaker you need....on the 36 volt you will need a 60 amp breaker and number 6 wire. You can also get those breakers from Minn Kota. The 50 amp breakers are for the 24 volt systems.

Your right about the 60 amp breaker "G"; seems everyone has them. But Minn Kota specifies a 50 amp breaker on this motor. And that is proving as hard a hens teeth to find. And don't even get me started on a 50/60 amp plug and receptacle. Motorguide has a 50 amp receptacle with #10 wire. That would be like me running this motor on a 30 amp fuse and saying "it's just a little fuse, it'll hold".
I've sent War Eagle an email expressing my opinion of their #8 wire, and Minn Kota an email expressing my opion of their requiring me to provide a 50 amp circuit; yet they only provide a 40 amp circuit on their end.

    My thoughts and research:
    1) A 101 uses three batteries vs. two batteries for a 80; therefore a charge will last longer.
2)Fishing cranks with one person in the back of the boat in rough water a short shaft might have trouble staying in the water.
    3) My 80 would do 2.5 mph, my 101 3.0. So at the end of the day with the batteries running down I should still get 2.0 mph from the 101.
    4) If a little Terrova is good then a lot of Terrova is better.:D

The 60 inch shaft is nice when you are in the back of the boat and you want to look and see which way the motor is pionting....its really nice when you pull the motor back in because you have someting to grab ahold of. As far as hanging over the side.....you can mount it where it will not do that.....I mounted mine actually straight with the boat....that way it does not hang out over the side and I do not have to move or reposition my rod holders to deploy or stow the motor. I sent War Eagle an email Friday night stating I thought the boat should have been wired with 50 amp breaker, wire, receptacle, plug, etc. ; and if they would supply the parts, I would supply the labor. They called this morning and said if a 24V trolling motor is specified they install a 40 amp circuit, if 36V is specified they install a 50 amp circuit. They are shipping all the parts and pieces I need today to do the upgrade.Thumbs Up
