I try to be the optimist, and don't want to rain on a parade, but as my
father-in-law pointed out to me the other day, if things get really bad,
game, esp. deer, won't last long around here. After the last depression,
deer had to be re-introduced to this area. I don't know how many years
there were none, but the season opened back up in the late fifties or early
sixties I think. I have often thought about the valuable knowledge, in
particular canning, soap-making, raising domestic animals without store-
bought feed, gardening, etc. that is being lost as our elders die out.
My family is still pretty grounded in this, but not so much as I would not
worry if all of a sudden that is all we had. And a lot of city folks will be
without a clue. One statement I have often heard by oldsters 'round here,
is that they knew when the depression was over - they saw a rabbit cross
the road, and nobody was chasing it!
