    Default USA-Begin Depression, Part 2

With the price of Oil jumping at record rates before Katrina struck, the USA is in for the biggest test of it's people since the Great Depression. Katrina has devestated not only what was in her path, but will completely change the economic status of the Country. The fact that fuel alone has risen so drastically since Katrina came through will only increase the cost of everything straight across the board. The only thing that will not increase is wages. I feel that crime will become much more prolific in the near future.
It sickens me that some will try to blame this on the Bush administration. The only thing we can hope for as Americans is that they can get more refineries online a.s.a.p. without having enviromentalists slowing things down. We are going to experience a fuel shortage, and until we can boost production back up, it's not going to get any better.
There is not a country in the world as strong as the US, but, our generation has yet to be "tested" through really hard times. Our parents and grand parents made sure that our lives would be better than theirs were. I would venture to say that alot of Americans have grown lazy, and expect things to be handed to them. Then there are times like this, when you see reports of everyday people stepping up to do what they can to help.
The people of the US are being tested right now, and it will take some time to smooth things out. There will be a record number of bankruptcies and foreclosures as well.
With Gods help, things will be OK, after all, it is his will anyway. We are all here just visiting.
I could ramble on for quite some time, but, I think I should check my ammunition supply. If it gets bad enough economically, we might just wake up some morning soon and discover complete and total anarchy across the US.

What needs to be done NOW is for the President to step up and put a freeze on the price of gas before it gets to out of control and then start rationing it now. That way everyone has a fair chance of being able to afford going to work. The longer he waits the more people won't be-able to afford to go to work and then only the very rich will be getting the gas.

I tatally agree with you. I work in a grocery store. Next week when the price changes come down I don't know what they'll be. Remember as you shop don't blame the employee's were just doing what the big shots tell us.

News reports just now stated that the Police Dept. in a major suburb of Tulsa only has enough fuel on hand to last through mid week. They are already curtailing patrols. Those of you in large citys/communities, should store up on some staples while the price is still low, and then, try not to use them. The backwash of Katrinas effect has not even begun to start showing. It is a complete and total economic disaster that we could be in store for.

Thats why I kill so many deer each year and put up vegetables in the freezer out of our garden. I got enough cheap food to last quite a while. Its hard for my 22 year old girlfriend to understand why I try to be semi-self sufficient and there probably aren't many like me at 28 years old. I try to not think like Chicken Little although I could last a long time on deer and turnip greens this time of year if the sky is falling.

I try to be the optimist, and don't want to rain on a parade, but as my
father-in-law pointed out to me the other day, if things get really bad,
game, esp. deer, won't last long around here. After the last depression,
deer had to be re-introduced to this area. I don't know how many years
there were none, but the season opened back up in the late fifties or early
sixties I think. I have often thought about the valuable knowledge, in
particular canning, soap-making, raising domestic animals without store-
bought feed, gardening, etc. that is being lost as our elders die out.
My family is still pretty grounded in this, but not so much as I would not
worry if all of a sudden that is all we had. And a lot of city folks will be
without a clue. One statement I have often heard by oldsters 'round here,
is that they knew when the depression was over - they saw a rabbit cross
the road, and nobody was chasing it!
