It all depends on the professionalism of the audiologist. I was fortunate to have an actual doctor and not a technician test and fit me. Mine have been as good as they could be, far from perfect, but I don't blast everyone out of the room with TV volume.
To give an examplle, if I set the timer on our stove or microwave, I can't hear the beeper when it goes off if I don't have my Hearing aids in. Also can't hear car's turn signal indicator without them. That's the little things that they improve for me.

PS. Mine were not that expensive either. They ran around $1700 each.

Plus the right one quit working all together in one week and the volume went crazy on the left one and would change from low to wide open every few minutes. That and the fact they kept working out of my ears and i would have to push them back in every ten minutes. My ears got sore from all that. The short time that they did work I could hear all the little sounds you speak of but I still had trouble understanding who I was talking to.

I have a mid range hearing loss and the voice of most women fall where my loss is. Women say I have selective hearing. Being on the Flight Deck of a Carrier the Mickey Mouse ears helped but not enough. The high Pitch screams of elect Motors on 30 to 100 HP running pumps and Centrifugal refrigeration chill water systems , then packaging and sorting Industrial equipment for 30 + years it is a wonder I can hear at all. Hearing Aids might help if I did not have 5 weinnie dogs that bark at every truck that comes over the Hill and a bird dog that is a Galoot and believes he is a weinnie dog as well. I have a Miracle ear that amplifies sound I can not wear inside the house and I do not like it as there is a slight delay in sound that becomes an echo. Guess selective hearing is not that bad as wasting thousands of bucks.

I lost mine in the Navy working on jet engines ....at times I had to adjust the fuel control on the engine with the engine running and had to take the mickey mouse ears off.....had them off a lot really. most of my loss is in the higher frequency range. Sometimes I mistake words for other words with a similar sound....sometimes I just miss a word all together.

I used to like playing the music loud....Now I play it loud to see if I like it!
