Remember those clearly. We where on a party line - two longs and a short ring for us to receive a call. We were rural folks. Still am a rural folk. Aggravating to pick up phone to call a girlfriend and there was folks talking to each other - sometimes for several minutes, or an hour or so. Another slick thing did was that when calling big cities (Dallas for example with an area code of 214 at that time), they kept the area code with digits where you didn't have the spin the dial as long. All area code numbers were short with less stokes on the dial.

I tend to notice such things.

You could also dial your own number and then hang it up and it would ring. I did it all the time too my mama till she figured out what I was doing then I got fussed at or whipped or probably both.

Randy, that was a nice letter. If you were offered a scholarship and did not take it, it proves my point that 2 a days mess up kids minds as well. Now go cook something to show us. Preferably a steak.(and be sure Abbey, Ernie and Taco get a little) And by the way I have sweated working on the house everyday. Only one a days. Mostly all day. I can see the end coming. 2 or 3 more weeks."D"

Reminds me of the "grape vine" where you talked between the beeps and got girls phone numbers and hung up and called them back.

I remember , when placing long distance calls, the operator would come on the line and get the number you were calling from so it could be billed to your account. I also remember on a few occasions my mother calling the phone company to protest long distance calls where someone else had given our number to the operator. Most people were honest enough but there were a few that weren't, some things don't change.
