Thanksgiving week I found the crappie just north of the 64 bridge. Yesterday only a couple were near the bridge. I moved several hundred yards away and found the school, but didn't have but about 30 minutes left to fish. We probably had about 13 keepers--didn't count when I cleaned them. We are planning a fish fry Tuesday night and I wanted just enough for the four of us to eat.

Rapala#1 made the trip over for some Jordan fishing. We froze. The breeze kicked up intermittently, but the 38F rain was unavoidably more consistent. All fish caught south of 64 in 16'-22' stuck to the lake bottom or to the top of structure. Lots of 12-13" fish--fat! Chris knows how to pull in the fish--he and I put about the same number of fish into the cooler. And I lost so many fish today--like, half a year's worth!
Did I mention it was cold? The fact that the fish which had been in the cooler for several hours had more range of motion than Chris or I by the end of the day was a fairly revealing assessment of how cold it was out there.
So, I lured Rapala out east on the promise of a free trolling motor. This morning, as I was getting ready to hook the boat up, my truck wouldn't initially start (and this is a first for my truck!) In all the distraction, the trolling motor didn't make the trip to Jordan with me! So I guess that means Chris will be coming back out again in the next few weeks--calling firsthand to remind me to bring my former trolling motor with me to the ramp!!!

I hope Chris has some caffeine and a sharp fillet knife, because he will need both! Thanks for coming!

Well, yes I did go out fishing with Jeremy today. wow was it COLLLLLLD, I'm still shivering. I'll tell yall now, Jeremy knows his fish, I did ok at first, but he really showed me up. I know its a terrible thought to have to go back to jordan and catch some monsters, but i'll survive. and those fish are on ice till the morning, im too tired and its even colder outside. I'll post some pics tomorrow.
Jeremy, I had a great time and will love eating your large contribution to the cooler.

It's amazing how far a college kid will go to get free food.

Good report Jeremy. Thanks for sharing.
Sounds like a C-O-L-D and W-E-T but productive day on the water.
Congrats to you and Rapala on the fat bunch of keepers.

Well here is the big fish of the day that was caught by Jeremy. As well as the complete layout of all 26 crappie. You gotta admit, Jeremy can put you on some fish, it don't matter what time of year it is.

26!? Geez, there they are. I guess I never learned to count higher than 24!! Thanks for posting the pics. In the top pic, it looks like the school of fish are turning their heads to pose for the picture. I had fun!
Sure, I can put you on fish, but I wish I could fish as well at 17 as you can! Hopefully the next time you head east, it will be soon but warmer!

PG24 and I headed out on a very cold lake yesterday. I was expecting an armada under the 64 bridge, but I'd say there was a max of about 5 other boats--we were all catching them. Donald and I pulled our first 35 keepers from just south of the bridge in 28-32' on the bottom. There was one boat catching several fish from the center of the channel over 36'--I suspect they had tapped into the cloud of fish suspended 20-30' over the gorge. Compared to my previous two trips, the size was a bit off--although the boat was sitting on different water as well. About noon, we headed south to my best spot this fall--but except for one 11" crappie, they weren't up in that 16-22' water anymore. Into the S-turns we we found calmer water. A spot that Donald and I nailed them in late '08 was holding solid clouds of shad and a some bigger fish--and it was there that we filled our limits.
A first for me:
I was holding a jig pole. I felt a bite and jerked up--snaggging a 2.5" shad. I thought...hmmmmm. I took it off the jig and hooked it on the minnow pole. The biggest fish of the day hit it on the way down! How cool is that!?
After that, I found that bigger fish were suspended up into and just under the giant clouds of shad--I started goosing the boat to lift the bait into the strike zone. When I see this from now on, I need to use some really big bait and fish in the cloud. Once all our poles were in and I was just getting on the motor for some end of the day exploration, I saw solid bait and a couple arcs in only 20-24'--the shallowest I had seem them all day. So I immediately threw a bouy, turned around and we caught a few quick keepers in the shallower water.
The action was fairly equitable on both ends of the boat today. And as always, Donald provides great company and hilarious one-liners. Wonderful to fish with you, Donald!

Good report Jeremy. I am hoping to fish this Tuesday and Wednesday. Glad to hear they are in the S-curves already. It is so much closer to me to fish that part of the lake than the upper part. Last year was a scratch down there because the lake was up and down a couple of times with heavy rains. Lots of muddy water comes down the Haw River side of the lake and if the rain is big enough, it pushes that muddy stuff up into the S-curves. '08 was a good year for me in that area and sounds like the old times are back.
