I'm betting the Cards told him that he needs to come clean if he is going to be the batting coach.
Scientists who have studied the physics of the sports say that hitting a round object with a round object is the hardest thing to do in ANY of the sports. Mark McGwire could certainly do it well.

Definitely. I'll go one step further. I'm thinking that Tony orchestrated this whole thing so that if would force McGwire to go public. Tony is very calculating and probably wanted to make sure that this matter was cleaned up before he left the Cards.

Never been a huge fan of baseball, or any other "Pro" sport. Too many other pursuits I guess. To me the ideal baseball game is when it's 110 outside and too hot to fish. Drink two beers in the first inning, fall asleep on the couch in my air conditioned house. Wake up at the bottom of the ninth and have another beer.:D

The last few posts are correct.
It wasn't illegal at the time and you have to have the skills to get a bat on the ball to make it go the right trajectory. It's a God given skill.
Someone had to try to keep up with Sosa and Bonds.
I had to admit it made baseball interesting again. Not enough for me to start paying close attention. I'm still waiting for the Players that went on strike to all be retired or coaching before I get interested again (I don't think I can outlast the owners). I'll keep watching the Springfield Cards. At least the owner and those guys care about fans.

Everyone called ole Jose Canseco a nut case when he accused Giambi, Rodriguez, McGuire, Palmiero and others of juicing, heck he was more believable than the big stars he named. I can't accept the argument on technicality that it wasn't illegal at the time, if so then why did they think they had to mislead everyone from congress to the American public about it? The club owners and league knew about it also and opted to treat the fans like mushrooms. Hope they all get sent to the minors.
