    Default Mark McGwire

I watched with interest the interview with Mark McGwire when he admitted steroid use. I am amazed that after his admission, that people continue to rip him apart. His long time manager, Tony LaRussa, has stood by his player every step of the way, and HE gets ripped apart for his unquestioned loyalty to one of his players. The only person to lose here is McGwire; by his own admission, he probably insured that he will never get into the hall of fame. What I find ironic about all of this is that we have Lawrence Taylor (the New York Giant long time linebacker) in the pro football hall of fame after numerous drug convictions. NOT alleged uses, CONVICTIONS! He even appears on dancing with the stars and does commercials. Duane Bowe, the Chiefs wide receiver serves a 4 game suspension for violating the leagues drug policy and is welcomed back amid cheers? In the midst of a WOEFUL 4-12 season, he hurt his team and gets cheered? Chiefs fans idolize Derrick Thomas who fathered FIVE illegitimae children who, to this day, receive no support what-so-ever and is inducted into the football hall of fame. See anything wrong with this picture? I do not condone what McGwire did, but I applaud and admire him for having the balls to stand up and admit it. Who among us could withstand intense scrutiny of our lives and come out clean? Don't know about you, but I sure as hell could not. McGwire made a terrible decision to use drugs; he stood up as a man and admitted it, how many of us would? It's over, give him a break.

Well said Jack! I always wondered why congress felt it necessary to hold hearings on steroid abuse in Baseball. Shouldn't Major League Baseball regulate drug use in the game? I never knew that fell under congressional control.

Thanks Speck; if you recall at the hearings, McGwire NEVER denied using steroids, his only comment was "I'm not here to talk about the past". Weak, I admit, but he did not lie.

i agree that congress has to much to do to be policing baseball, and i applaud mark for admitting steroid use and hope he works out great for the cards, but him saying that the steroids had nothing to do with hitting homers is a little much.

If he wanted to be a man and stand up and admit it,maybe it should have been done years ago?

He broke the rules, and he didn't lie,but didn't admit it either till now.Liars and thiefs are on my chit list...no use for them.

Jackb you hit the nail on the head.

Speckhunter it is easier to deal with Baseball than the problems of the American people. Kind of takes the lime light off a congress who are more concerned about protecting their own jobs, than crossing party lines to get some work done to help the American people. Ahh but who do we have to blame for that? Us the voting American public. We each seem to look at electing only people who will seem to do the best job for us. Not people who will do good for everyone.

Catman & Cook, I too applaud Mark for standing up and admitting it. But I also think he should have done it long before accepting another job in baseball. With him admitting it only after the ink was dry on his new job contract with the Cardinals it looks more like he admitted it to save his new job.

It seems to me that we have no true hero's in Sports today for kids to look up too. Maybe I am wrong but that is why I look to Motor Sports for hero's. Because anyone who is willing to risk their life by strapping themselves behind a wheel is more of hero to me than some over paid football, basketball or baseball player. Who either runs to their Union or don't play because they have a hang nail.

Just to name a few of the people I respect in Motor Sports:

    John Force
    Dale Earnhardt Sr
Junior Johnson - Granted a convicted whiskey runner!
    Carl Edwards
    Dale Earnhardt Jr
    Mark Martin
    Tony Stewart
    Ned Jarrett

Another good point Bob#1; my guess is if you tested NFL players for steroids, you would have about 20 weeks of tv time to fill.
